‘Dancing’ Wins, Earth Turns

“Dancing With the Stars” dominated the ratings on Monday night, with an average of 20.2 million viewers from 8 to 10 p.m., according to Nielsen’s estimates, that helped ABC win the night over all. CBS and Fox finished in a virtual tie for second place: Fox broadcast “House” (12.2 million) at 8 and “24” (11.2 million) at 9, while CBS got a boost from its comedy lineup, including “Two and a Half Men dvd” (14.4 million) at 9 and “Rules of Engagement” (11 million) at 9:30. NBC was a distant fourth.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Long Way Home

This is part of my comic book challenge. Comic number 5.
I’m a huge Buffy 1-7 dvd fan but I prefer seasons 1 through 3 instead of the subsequent seasons. I find this a bit puzzling because I tend to like books and movies with adult protagonists more than teenagers. And yet the case of Buffy 1-7 is clearly very young during the seasons 1-3. Then again, I’m of the opinion that the first three season are hold together far better plotwise and thematically than the later ones. (I especially disliked witchcraft as symbol for two different things which aren’t related to each other.) Still, there are episodes in the later seasons which I just love.
Anyway, I was thrilled to hear that Buffy 1-7 box set would continue in comic book form. Was a bit less thrilled when I realized that I had to wait for them to come out in trade paperback form. I did manage to get in English before but now it has been published in Finnish, too! I was a bit worried about the translation since even the quality of the subtitles, er, varied a lot. This translator seems to know something about the Buffyverse although, alas, not quite enough. (For example, “Bored now” was translated into “Are you still bored”…)
Overall: There is enough of a mix of old and new to make me a happy old Buffy 1-7 dvd wholesale fan!

'Angel' actor dies at 33 of heart disease

An agent for 33-year-old singer and actor Andy Hallett says the former cast member from the vampire TV series "Angel" has died of congestive heart disease.

The show ran five seasons on the WB network and ended in 2004.
Hallett, an only child, is survived by his father Dave Hallett and mother Lori Hallett.

RIP: Andy Hallett aka Lorne from Angel.

Sad day indeed. I hated Buffy 1-7 and angel for years, till a friend let me borrow the Buffy 1-7 dvd. Wow, i turned into a huge Joss Whedon fan. I watch all his stuff. Love dollhouse, love fire fly and serenity. I don’t like every episode of angel and Buffy 1-7 seasons dvd, but there are moments. Especially the episode where angel gets turned into a muppet. LOL. Any way, the green demon who ran a karaoke bar. He was one of my favorite characters, and loved his last role on the last episode of angel ever. I miss that show. Now I know a reunion will never be the complete. RIP Andy Hallett. Go ahead, make fun of me, I don’t care. I love Buffy 1-7 box set and Angel.

If you can't believe the TV ...

On "Two-and-a-Half Men dvd," Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones appear to sing the theme song. Are they really?— Art G., Medford
Whatsamatter, Art? Don't believe everything you see on TV?
As you suspected, the ditty in question ("Men, men, men, men, manly man"¦") is not sung by the actors. They're lip syncing.
The voice you hear is that of Elizabeth Daily, known as E.G. Daily, a singer and voice-over artist who is perhaps best known for doing the voice of Tommy Pickles on "Rugrats" and Buttercup on "The Powerpuff Girls."

Two and a Half Men dvd remains one of those shows that never fails to keep you laughing on and on and on and on.
So in case you're wondering why I picked that video among all the videos on YouTube, it's because I figured that the show completely revolves around sexual jokes. And not in a nasty way.
And don't lie, I know you laughed!

Pilots: 'Happiness Isn't Everything' for Mary Steenburgen

Mary Steenburgen, whose last series role was on "Joan of Arcadia," is headed back to CBS in the comedy pilot "Happiness Isn't Everything."
In other comedy casting news, CBS has also found the two leads for "Waiting to Die," NBC has signed Leslie Bibb and John Michael Higgins for its Justin Adler pilot and former "Drew Carey Show" regular Ryan Stiles has joined Anita Renfroe's show.
Steenburgen is joining Jason Biggs, Ben Schwartz and Richard Dreyfuss in "Happiness," which comes from "Arrested Development" writers Mitch Hurwitz and Jim Vallely. She'll be playing Dreyfuss' husband and the mother of siblings Biggs and Schwartz, according to The Hollywood Reporter, in a comedy about a family that's a little bit too close.
Steenburgen has also been cast in the movie "Did You Hear About the Morgans?," a romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker. Her recent credits include "Step Brothers" and "Four Christmases."
Elsewhere:
- Bibb ("Confessions of a Shopaholic," "Crossing Jordan") will play the oldest of a group of siblings in the Adler comedy, which is about how the sibs relate to each other and their overbearing mom. Higgins -- whose casting in the pilot is formally in second spot to the unlikely-to-return "Kath & Kim" -- will play her husband, a professional polo player.
- "Waiting to Die" will star Nick Thune ("Knocked Up") and T.J. Miller ("Carpoolers," "Cloverfield") as two guys whose lives look like crap from the outside but who are nonetheless happy.
- Stiles, who has a recurring part on "Two and a Half Men dvd," will star opposite comedian Renfroe in a pilot presentation for a family comedy.

One Gift with Many Recipients

When television stars are expecting a baby, it is not uncommon for their fans to send them gifts to celebrate the new life they are bringing into the world. Alyson Hannigan and Alexis Denisof, who became famous for roles in Joss Whedon’s Buffy 1-7 dvd the Vampire Slayer and Angel, are no exception to this rule. Bob Averell and other former members of the Bronze Posting Board, online fans of Buffy 1-7 dvd box set the Vampire Slayer known as Bronzers, have banded together to send the couple a basket of children’s books to welcome their first child.

The Kids Need to Read Foundation admires the Bronzers choice in presents, but this story does not end with just one simple gift. When the group sends a present, they raise the money through individual member donations. Any funds left over after the purchase of a gift are donated to charity.

The Bronzers raised $125 over the amount needed to purchase and ship their gift to the expectant parents, so they chose to donate these funds to Kids Need to Read. What a wonderful way to give!

The Kids Need to Read Foundation thanks these Buffy 1-7 the Vampire Slayer fans for extending their generosity to help us inspire kids’ imaginations through the magic of books.

Reminder - Joss Whedon is coming to a theater near you in April

No, you didn't miss a scoop about a Serenity sequel or that long-rumored Buffy movie finally getting made. Mr. Whedon will appear in a special live simulcast performance of Chicago Public Radio's This American on April 23.

The program will beam into 400 movie screens nationwide and will feature TAL host, and Buffy fan, Ira Glass and guests sharing stories connected by a central theme, "Return to the Scene of the Crime." The simulcast will feature show regulars Dan Savage, Starlee Kine, Mike Birbiglia, David Rakoff and Dave Hill along with Dollhouse producer Whedon who will deliver a "special musical performance."

I missed the first TAL movie theater simulcast in 2008, but I'm already making plans to catch this one. The TAL podcast is one of my favorite weekly listens, and I used to enjoy the Showtime TV version, also hosted by Glass. Oh, and JOSS FRAKKIN' WHEDON is gonna sing, or play the harp, or conduct a full orchestra or something!

We don't know any real details about Whedon's musical performance, but I hope it will feature back-up by Nathan Fillion and Dr. Horrible leads Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day. Or maybe a medley from "Once More With Feeling," the great Buffy musical episode.

DVD review - Buffy season 2, episodes 9 and 10

Episodes 9 and 10: What's My Line parts 1 and 2Synopsis: As career week at school has Buffy wondering what her future may have been like, Spike hires three professional bounty hunters to ensure she has no future at all. Then, Buffy joins forces with a mysterious Slayer named Kendra in hopes of saving Angle from Spike and Drusilla and the deadly ritual they have planned.
I'm reviewing the two parter together to make it a bit easier for me. This is the first one of these since season 1, and the story certainly warrants it. First, Buffy had a Dorothy Hamill obcession - nice. This is how you bring out rich backstory details of a character, in a logical and unobtrussive way. If that was SMG doing the actual skating (it certainly appeared like it in many of the scenes) then she is pretty good. We get to have some Willow and Oz time together - and even I caught the change in his hair color between episodes. Mistake? I think not! I am sure this is a clue to something I'll learn more about in a future episode. The debut of Kendra was surprising but logical (Buffy was dead after all last season). It played as a nice contrast between the two - especially since one goes by the handbook (to the letter) and the other didn't even know one existed. Also, I love how Kendra is continually surprised by how many folks know Buffy is the slayer; her American counterpart has no sense of secret identity at all. Nice to see the strain between Giles and Ms. Calendar - that makes sense given all she went through in the previous episodes. The bug guy was downright creepy - and Xander and Cordelia made an awesome team (and an awesome couple who eventually cannot deny their attraction, even though it is so "Pretty In Pink" in reverse - which would really make it "Some Kind of Wonderful", wouldn't it?). The scenes with Dru "playing" with Angel was downright sadistic. Then again, he did drive her crazy centuries back, so it is a little payback coming around. The whole Spike-Dru-Angel triangle makes for great tension. And, speaking of great, that final church battle that brought down the house - perfect. The end was even better, with the now healed Dru rising up and vowing to nurse her Spike back to health. She is one scary lady! All in all, a solid, well-round storyline.

Angel's Andy Hallett dies

Krevlornswath of the Deathwok Clan -- "Lorne" to his friends -- is no more.
Andy Hallett, the actor who played the Kermit-green empathic demon on 'Angel' for four seasons has died of heart disease at the age of 33, per E! Online.

The showbiz-loving Lorne ran the nightclub Caritas, a karaoke/nightclub where demons could come to relax without having to worry about demon-on-demon violence. (Not only was fighting against the club's policy, but it was actually impossible, thanks to a protection spell Lorne hired the Furies to cast.) By singing one of your favorite songs -- Angel tended to rock out to Manilow -- Lorne could tell both your near-term future and what's inside your heart. He later went on to run the show business branch of Wolfram & Hart.
I really hadn't heard much from Hallett after 'Angel' was canceled in 2004. The article on E! said he was working on music. He was often mentioned in the official 'Buffy/Angel' magazine as one of the stars who would come out for the various conventions and fan events, so he seemed to be a good guy.
The character of Lorne continues to be included in the various 'Angel/Spike' comic books published by IDW, including the current 'Angel: After the Fall' (aka 'Angel: Season 6) and 'Spike: Asylum.'
Probably Lorne's shining moment was the three episodes he spent with Angel & Co. in his homeworld of Pylea at the end of the second season. As the lone music lover in a world that hates music, Lorne was something of an outcast, as shown by the following. (By the way, that's Buffy/Angel creator Joss Whedon as Lorne's brother Numfar doing the Dance of Joy.)

Sleeping with the elephant

Addressing the Press Club in Washington, D. C., on 25 March 1969, and in reference to the relationship between Canada and the United States, Pierre Elliott Trudeau said, "Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is affected by every twitch and grunt."As a student of world politics observing the differences between the Bush and Obama administrations, it has become obvious to me that only one man on the planet has succeeded in capturing the true essence of each. This man is none other than Hugh Laurie; fellow member of the British Commonwealth and star of the celebrated TV show House, MD.

Confident as I am in the intelligence of my readers, I shall explain no further and leave you to agree with me as you watch the following offerings. In this first performance, assisted by Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie captures the essence of the Bush administration; whether he, in his genius, knows it or not.

Next, Hugh Laurie gets to the heart of what I personally also understand to be the crux of the Obama plan, both for the US and the world. This song really speaks to the workin' man in me.

Obviously Hugh Laurie is the personification of enlightenment

The Tudors: It's Good to Be the King

Despite Obama's call for hope and change, 2009 seems to be a terrible year for entertainment. There are only two super-hero movies, and while Watchmen was above average, the new Wolverine movie is the third sequel to a strictly 'alright' film. 24 and Heroes have taken a nose-dive in quality as both desperately try to make up for their last seasons and recreate the magic of earlier times. Even House M.D. has gone down-hill as House's team is incapable of doing anything but act as furniture in Hugh Laurie's office. But amidst the gloom of 2009 there is a small glimmer of light and called "The Tudors", which enters its third season April 5th.
The Tudors is a historical drama that takes place in the 16th century during the reign of King Henry Tudor VIII. For those of you who failed history class, King Henry VIII was the original pimp. He was married eight times during his reign, had six of his wives executed for various reasons, and had countless affairs. In addition to his playboy lifestyle, good ol' Henry was King of England during the Protestant Reformation and converted England to Protestantism so he could legally divorce his wife in favor of his mistress. Between the political intrigue and the romance The Tudors captures a truly fascinating period of history, and executes it beautifully with magnificent settings, great actors and an above-average script.
The concept of historical television dramas on premium channels inevitably forces me to compare The Tudors to HBO's Rome. As much as I love Showtime (most notably for Dexter) HBO will pretty much always win in a quality competition. While both Rome and The Tudors deal with political intrigue, rampant graphic sex and epic characters in history, Rome's characters are complex and characterized by their deep convictions on humanity, philosophy, political theory and of course sexuality, all of which are brilliantly portrayed, even by secondary characters. The characters in The Tudors by comparison are mostly two-dimensional. Henry's reign was characterized by relative peace and for those reasons I'm willing to give it a pass on its below-average character development, as the characters spend most of their time trying to sleep with the king or manipulate the king by sending their daughters to seduce him. Additionally, the lead characters in Rome are poor soldiers caught in the endless bloodshed of Rome's civil wars as they drift between factions. Meanwhile, the characters in The Tudors are all noble and even the poorest have mansions and servants. Perhaps a more apt title for this show would be Beverly Hills 90210 1543 A.D..
Despite its flaws it is a truly enjoyable show. The settings are varied and colorful, from castles to court, from woodland hunting grounds to medieval London. The plot is intriguing and may even make you feel sophisticated; and despite my qualms with the writing, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (King Henry VIII) and James Frain (Thomas Cromwell) perform brilliantly in their parts. And Peter O' Toole plays the Pope!
The Tudors begins its third season April 5. If you haven't seen the previous two seasons then get caught up in time for the premiere. This should keep you entertained for a while; hopefully Hollywood will produce some new, original programs by the time the season ends its run in early June.
And maybe Uwe Boll will win the Oscar's Best Picture for his live-action film "Sonic the Hedgehog" starring Usain Bolt.

Paging Dr.Howard, Dr.Fine, Dr.Howard

The Farrelley Brothers, the masterminds behind There's Something About Mary, Kingpin, and Dumb and Dumber, are preparing to make another movie. A movie about the Three Stooges. I would be okay with this, and I would be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt because I think these guys are funny, and they've shown they can do slapstick humor, but...Then I saw the cast. And all benefit of the doubt just went out the window. This is a mistake. A mistake on Speed Racer as a live action film scale. The big casting coup is multiple best actor Oscar winner Sean Penn, who is set to play Larry. Jim Carrey has signed on to play Curly. And the brothes are pursuing Bennico Del Torro to play Moe. (There's no info from the story on who will play Shemp or if his character will even be in the movie.)Yes, you read that right. Now this is supposed to be a biopic, so there's going to be drama as well as comedy, but still...Just because Sean Penn says he'll do the movie is no reason to cast Sean Penn. It's been over 20 years since Penn has done a comedy -- besides a guest spot on Two and a Half Men -- and he's not displayed any ability to do slapstick, physical comedy. The same with Del Torro, of whom I'm also a fan. I just can's see Penn as Larry, or Del Torro as Moe. Carrey makes sense, though I see him as Moe more than I do as Curly, but the rest of this cast, no, it just doesn't work.
I'm not the studio funding this thing, though, and if this is how they want to spend their money, then fine. Just don't expect my support.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I used to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I watched Angel a bit. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was occasionally brilliant, but many weeks I found myself wondering why I watched the show at all. Buffy turned Sarah Michelle Gellar into a star and a sex symbol. The interesting things about that is she was probably the fourth sexiest woman on the show. Charisma Carpenter, Julie Benz and Eliza Dushku were all easier on the eyes than SMG, nothing against her and really not my point. My point is that in Dollhouse Whedon created the show around a strong female lead, this time Dushku is the lead character Echo, aka Caroline. A strong selling point of this show is that Echo and the other actives who live in the Dollhouse are extremely attractive, tough females. As in Buffy though I believe that Dushku while still attractive in her own right is only one of a number of women on the show who provide wonderful eye candy. Olivia Williams who runs the Dollhouse is slightly older than the actives, but she is quite beautiful and as her character pointed out in the most recent episode quite British. To go along with the superficial beauty she is also likely the best actress on the show. Perhaps the most surprising beauty on the show belongs to that of Miracle Laurie who plays Millie the neighbor of the FBI agent looking for Echo. Her name is quite appropriate as it is near miraculous that Laurie, who is a little more rubenesque than the other women on the show and most women in Hollywood, actually got a part on the show. Also I think she may actually be the most attractive on the show. She is not heavy by any means, but is in Hollywood standards. Even Dr. Claire Saunders played by Amy Acker is nice looking. In one of the earlier episodes Dr. Saunders was attacked leaving her with a few scars on her face she still looks pretty nice even with those huge scars on her face. Whedon seems to be like Quentin Tarantino in a way. He was a bit of a self-described geek growing up and now he constantly puts attractive women in roles where they are physically dominant and are not afraid to fight with any guy or gal.
I did not mean to get off on to much of a rant about the physical attractiveness of the women on the show, but for the first six episodes that is really all there was to the show - A lot of eye candy, a lot of fighting and violence. Most weeks I found myself bored and unsure if I was going to continue watching it for the rest of the year. I was also wondering if the show had any chance at being successful either critically or in the ratings. Sure it would get the diehard Whedon fans and there were bound to be many people who tuned in to see the great looking women in sometimes skimpy outfits and the action, but was the show ever going to show more than just a pretty flashy surface. I did not hold out much hope. The last few weeks have shown some potential, but really nothing to get too excited about until the seventh episode titled Echoes. The episode reminded me of a cross between Fringe and one of the better episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Of course this could just be a blip on the radar in an otherwise mediocre show, but I do have some hope now.
The whole season has been building toward the next episode dubbed the Awakening. If you have watched the show you will know what is being referenced by the Awakening. Whedon has at least piqued my interest and reminded me why I used to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer back in the day. Sure there were likely to be weeks or months without a really good episode, but occasionally he would surprise you with a truly memorable show. Next week’s show promises to be one of the better ones. If it fails to live up to those expectations or slowly fades back into mediocrity after that episode just get your popcorn ready there is plenty of eye candy to keep you busy. Let’s just hope Whedon can build on this last episode or if the show gets cancelled he will have no one to blame but himself.

Buffy is just a girl.

One of my favorite lines from Buffy the Vampire Slayer was, "All right, yes, date and shop and hang out and go to school and save the world from unspeakable demons. You know, I wanna do girlie stuff!" The juxtaposition with dating and shopping with saving the world, all falling under the category of 'girlie stuff' in such a mundane way, encapsulated not only what the show was for me but also what I think Whedon's best weapon in terms of a feminist message is. Girlie stuff, far from being a minute list of activities filled with pink and bows and skirts, encompasses what girls do. Girls can save the world; girls saving the world is cool. Girls saving the world aren't becoming "masculine"; they are eschewing gender norms, but that doesn't mean letting go of being a 'girl'. It means changing the definition of what is meant by being a girl. It means changing the perimeters of what we allow ourselves to think of as girlish behavior. Whedon does it again and again. We are told at various points in the series that Buffy is "just a girl", usually right before she does something to save the world. In the season finale of season five, right before heading off to battle a hell goddess, Buffy saves a teen from a vampire attack, ending with this exchange:
BOY: But... you're just a girl.

Robert Pattinson's Got Some Competition

I don't think I've ever actually wanted to be a vampire, but I can understand you thinking that based on my affinity for vang-tertainment like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "True Blood" and "Interview with the Vampire."
And while I am not banging my Edward Cullen drum as loudly as some others, I generally get the appeal of Robert Pattinson and the "Twilight" saga.
But something tells me the crazy-haired one is going to have some stiff competition in next year's Mister Undead American competition now that Ian Somerhalder has joined the cast of The CW drama "Vampire Diaries."
Ian, who kinda resembles a creature of the night anyway, will play Damon, a smug vampire who can go from playful to evil in a split second. I'm glad he doesn't appear to be playing the romantic lead (maybe the villain) since bad boys are way hotter. Especially when they're vampires.
Oh, and in other random fun fact news, Kate Bosworth is standing next to Ian in this picture. Apparently they both starred on a series called "Young Americans" that aired on The WB in 2000. Hopefully Ian will have better luck with this teen drama, which could be considered Forever Young Americans!

Buffy...

The series premiere of Angel definitely has a stronger start than the corresponding season of Buffy. "City Of" does a great job at introducing the character of Angel to an audience that might not be completely aware of the vampire with a soul. The opening scene in the bar where Angel first appears drunk and then we realize he is acting in order to protect a damsel in distress was a perfect start for Angel's new adventures. It is clear from the get go that this show will be different from Buffy and that was a good thing. It would have been easy to just recreate the Buffy formula but the Angel crew took him in his own direction and it pays off. Doyle is introduced as a great foil to Angel. One of them carries the weight of the world on his shoulders and has the furrowed brow to prove it; while the other tries very hard to balance the serious of the mission with humanity. The plot of the episode gives the show an old school detective movie vibe that fits in nicely with the new Los Angeles locale. Once Cordelia joins the trio by the episode's end we have a great team established who will be ready for the new challenges that LA and the mysterious Wolfram & Hart will provide. I was wary of this spin off when I had first heard it was coming and by the end of the first episode I was sold

dollhouse goes to college

Tonight's episode of Dollhouse read like page freaking 33 of Slaughter and Leslie's Academic Capitalism, "congealed intellectual labor" and all. As in Buffy Season 4 academic technoscience is sinister, but here the demons are us dude, (which was ultimately the point of Buffy as well, i suppose.) Unlike in Buffy we're not (yet) talking about the state - although the Dollhouse has infiltrated state agencies up the wazoo. Instead we get the relationship between the university, the shady biotech/pharma corporation, and the global conglomerate that erases animal rights' activists' brains and turns them into sex robot amnesiac rewriteable palimpsests. Instead of the military demonic academic complex it's an only slightly paranoid look at the nefarious entanglements of university patent offices and the politics of tech transfer and industrial espionage. Three Joss Whedon shows and three abused grad students - Buffy had Riley, so damaged by drug withdrawal and emasculation he pays vampires to bite him. Angel had Fred, thrown into a hell dimension by an advisor jealous of his student's superior command of theoretical physics, and dollhouse has the kid who beats his own skull to a pulp against the lab window tripping out on outsourced Dollhouse brain juice.I'm writing this directly after the episode aired. I was not going to post about television again for a while, much less about a show i wrote quite a bit about last week, but the subject of this week's episode demanded otherwise. I may have more to say later or tomorrow or whenever I get the chance to rewatch the episode. In the meantime, it's back to the writing

House MD Mega Spoiler: Are Chase and Cameron getting

Ausiello says it better than me: Omar Epps and a bunch of his House cronies were tweeting about a big bachelor party scene that was being shot that day, fueling speculation that Chase is about to march down the aisle with Cameron.
This could also mean the death coming on House MD is neither of them… but it also can mean they´re having more air time, so yay!
What do you think about a wedding between Chase and Cameron?

House MD season 5 episode 21 “Saviors” promo pics

OMG it’s Cameron !!! OMG it’s actually her ! OMG I think I’m hallucinating because this can’t be real,TPTB hate Cameron and House/Cam so it must be I’m imagining stuff.Of course this might just be another episode that’s going to make us believe she’s finally getting more screentime only to have 2 episodes with no Cameron in them. Or it could be that she only appears in 3 small scenes and they just took pics of that . Probably they’re going to give us some Cameron to keep the non-Huddy viewers from leaving since the Huddy sex is coming(maybe that’s why she’s in the episode, because the Huddy happens in episode 20 or 22 or maybe even that one).
Fuck it,I no longer have any faith in these people, they screwed up big time and it ain’t getting better, not with the power-play and the playing favorites that goes on.
Look at the pure chemistry between House and Cameron…it’s so painful to watch it knowing that TPTB DECIDED TO BE UNFAIR AND NOT EVEN GIVE H/CAM A GOOD LITTLE ARC,SOME LOVIN’ LIKE OTHER PEOPLE ON OTHER SHOWS DO !
Ah,whatever,it’s Cameron in an episode, thank God.

"Reaper" back on my radar

So yesterday I took some time from crunching fantasy baseball numbers to catch up with "Reaper" (8 p.m. Tuesdays on the CW). The season premiere a few weeks ago was underwhelming, but it's definitely picked up steam since. Safe to say, I'm back on board.
I had two main problems with the premiere, and they've both been addressed. I'm still not a fan of Sock's hot new step-sister, Kristen, but her role appears to have been reduced. Not that I'm opposed to a little T&A, but in this case, it was just too . . . . blatant. Kristen got a little bit more depth in the second episode, but has barely been seen since, which is fine by me. She can come back when she brings something to the table. Right now, that character is extraneous. Until that changes, the less we see, the better.
On the other hand, I'm really liking the addition of Nina, Ben's new demon girlfriend. (BTW, when did he become Ben? Wasn't he Bengie last season?) Her character is a total ripoff of Anya from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but I liked Anya and I miss "Buffy" so I don't mind. She's suddenly the most interesting character on the show. (Well, aside from Ray Wise as the devil. I loved him leading the AA meeting. Pure eeeeeevil.)
Great scene last week with Ben in Nina's lair, with the mysterious dripping, creaking thing hanging in the rafters and her kiss tasting oddly like pennies. But hey writers, we can jump to our own conclusions and are able to appreciate subtlety -- the falling cow corpse and her explaining it was the flavor of blood in her mouth actually sucked a few laughs out of the scene. Sometimes a sly wink and imagination are more effective than over-explaining everything.
Ooooh, back to ripoffs, why was there no wink-wink, nudge-nudge moment in episode three, with the ficticious Les Nessman? Would a throwaway reference to "WKRP in Cincinnati" have killed them? Sadly, most of the show's viewers probably wouldn't have gotten it anyway, so maybe the name was enough of an inside joke.
My other problem was how the workplace/girlfriend situations were resolved so easily when the season began. But nice twists have made those more interesting. Ted's been fired (and now rehired as a trainee) and Andi's the new boss, and that new dynamic works well. As a character, Andi isn't the most. . . . interesting. So maybe a little personal/professional tension with Sam will help liven things up.
Random aside -- did anyone else notice the soul this week was named Edmund Fitzgerald? As in, "The Wreck of..."? And he was a shipping tycoon. Very nice touch.
So I guess Morgan, the devil's other son, will become a recurring character now. I'm fine with that. There's potential in that character. He's good and slick, a spoiled pretty-boy who I can very easily see becoming Sam's new nemesis. You know someone that smarmy has to be up to no good.
Overall, I like how they're expanding the cast of characters. There's only so much you can do with the same four. Again, it's a lot like "Buffy," and how the additions of characters like Anya, Spike, Dru, even Andrew, made things more lively and interesting.
I'm hoping they start to stray from the soul-of-the-week format and delve more into the secondary plots of the demons' failed coup against the devil and the mysterious Alan, the soul who escaped the devil's clutches. Sam's dead dad is back (Ha! As a zombie?), and that's another potentially interesting direction to follow.
All and all, I'm liking "Reaper" a lot. Let's hope it gets a few viewers and sticks around.

Fishburne is the $14 million man

When William Petersen left CSI, he left a very, very cushy job. He was making a cool $600,000 per episode, more than Kiefer Sutherland was getting for 24, but not quite as much as Charlie Sheen was taking home for Two and a Half Men ($825,000 per show).
Well, CSI decided not to skimp when they cast Laurence Fishburne to assume the star spot on the crime drama. Fishburne is earning more than $14 million for this season of CSI. (So much for a recession!)
That's about as much as Petersen was making, give or take, and commensurate with a movie star making the foray into TV. And, thus far, Fishburne has earned every cent. The CBS procedural has not missed a beat since Petersen's exit. In fact, the Fishburne for Petersen switch-out has been like all those changes on Law & Order. Throughout that NBC run, from Michael Moriarty to Sam Waterson, Steven Hill to Fred Dalton Thompson, the show just keeps ticking along, proving that the show is the star, not the actors.
That, of course, then begs the question: would CBS have done as well with a star who cost half as much as Laurence Fishburne? You have to wonder, especially in light of the fact that this is the same show that scrimped on the supporting players (George Eads and Jorja Fox) a few years back when they wanted more money.

Young women love TLC's Jon and Kate Plus 8

Here is one the better ratings stories of the season. The Monday night season finale of Jon and Kate Plus 8, a reality series about the day-to-day life of super-sized family, beat such network series as Fox's 24 and NBC's Heroes with the advertiser-dream audience of women 18 to 34.
It also topped Two and Half Men and Rules of Engagement with that same audience. Both comedies are on CBS.
Meanwhile, nothing on cable came close to Jon and Kate in any major demographic.
The series, which is produced by The Learning Channel, a Maryland-based cable operation, was featured as part of trend story about TV and big families, that I wrote in my Z on TV column for the Sunday Sun two weeks ago. You can read it here.
Here is what the trade magazine, Brodcasting & Cable, had to say about the show's finale on Monday:
TLC's hit reality show Jon and Kate Plus 8's season finale Monday night was the highest-rated episode in six demographics. The show was watched by 4.6 million viewers and ranked first among all ad-supported cable in the 9:30 p.m. half-hour among HH, W25-54, P18-49, W18-49, and W18-34.
The final episode topped CBS' hit comedy block Rules of Engagement and Two and a Half Men, Fox's 24, NBC's Heroes and the CW's One Tree Hill in the 9 p.m. hour among W18-34.
The program was the highest-rated episode ever among HH (with a 3.4 rating), P2+, P25-54, W25-54, P18-49, and W18-49.

New ABC Comedy: In the Motherhood

I’ve been checking out the promos and sneak peeks for ABC’s latest comedy called In the Motherhood, which premieres this Thursday, March 26, at 8pm EST. I’m not sure this one is gonna float my boat.
Based on a fairly well-known Web series of the same name helmed by Leah Remini (The King of Queens), Jenny McCarthy (Two and a Half Men), and Chelsea Handler (Chelsea Lately), the television version stars Will & Grace’s mega talented Megan Mullally and Curb Your Enthusiasm’s equally gifted Cheryl Hines as Rosemary and Jane, respectively.
Along with Emily (Worst Week’s Jessica St. Clair), the show’s three central characters are supposed to be instantly familiar mother figures everyone has encountered at one time or another. Rosemary is one of those lackadaisical moms more interested in her personal life than that of her child, Jane is a divorced career mom of two trying to keep it all together, and Emily considers herself a — and I quote — “model stay-at-home-super-mom.”
These personality types definitely don’t resemble any of the women from the neighborhood where I grew up, but I guess (and I’m sure ABC hopes) enough viewers will “get” them to make the show a success. As for me, I’m going to have to sample an episode or three before I’ll know whether or not In the Motherhood will be a regular watch on my TV schedule.
Follow the jump to sample a trio of sneak peeks at the series and make up your own mind about how tasty (or not) this particular comedy looks.

Two and a half men

The series centers around a freewheeling bachelor, Charlie, whose carefree lifestyle is interrupted when his newly separated brother Alan moves in along with his son, Jake. The show was co-created by executive producers Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn. In its third season, starting September 2005, it moved to Mondays at 9:00 p.m. (taking Everybody Loves Raymond's time slot). Two and a Half Men debuted in local syndication in September 2007, also soon to be syndicated on the FX cable network in 2010. Production on the show was halted on November 6, 2007 due to the 2007 WGA strike. The show returned March 17, 2008 with nine episodes to conclude the fifth season. CBS also renewed the show for a sixth season, which premiered on September 22, 2008, five years after the first episode of the series initially aired. On March 18, 2009, CBS renewed Two and a Half Men for an additional three seasons, making it run a total of nine seasons.
Charlie Sheen as Charles Francis "Charlie" Harper, a hedonistic ladies' man, never married (although he once was about to get married to Mia (Emmanuelle Vaugier)), jingle/children's song writer who tends to pick on his younger brother Alan but ultimately loves him. He is the exact opposite of his little brother: relaxed and affluent. He loves his nephew Jake and gives him advice (much of which is not age-appropriate), but the two often trade barbs as well.
Jon Cryer as Alan Jerome Harper, Charlie's divorced chiropractor brother, who is more conscientious than his brother but continually stricken with bad luck and teased by Charlie. After losing his house to his wife, Judith, during the divorce, he permanently resides with Charlie. He is generally a nice and polite person, but seems to have a weakness for women who treat him poorly, which may stem from the non-nurturing relationship he had with his and Charlie's mother. The most practical character on the show, Alan's scruples and frugality are frequent joke-fodder. Jon Cryer plays the part of the younger brother, by two years, yet in real life he is a few months older than Charlie Sheen. Prior to Two and a Half Men, Cryer and Sheen appeared together in the 1991 comedy Hot Shots!
Angus T. Jones as Jacob David "Jake" Harper, the underachieving son of Alan and Judith. He spends most of his free time playing video games, eating, watching television and sleeping. He loves his father and uncle but is often surly toward them. Despite popular belief, Sheen, Cryer, and Jones do not sing the show's catchy theme song; the voice Jones is lip-syncing is actually that of female singer and voice-over artist Elizabeth Daily.

Nick On “Upside Down and Halfway to Happyland”

Hey guys, Nick here. Just thought I’d let you know that I appeared on the latest episode of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer discussion podcast, Upside Down and Halfway to Happyland, hosted by Kim Butler. The episode was recorded literally, minutes after we did Episode 9 of Geekeasy, which means that at the time I had yet to finish watching season 3 of Buffy. Since then I’ve run through season 4 (I talk about it on Geekeasy 10, which Will is editing as I type this and should be up before the end of the week.) and have actually just gotten started on Season 5. The episode of Upside Down and Halfway to Happyland was a lot of fun and in my opinion turned out a lot better than Geekeasy 9. Check it out!

Television--- the good

Joss Whedon first wooed fans with his cult-fave TV hit "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." After the end of Buffy and her slaying, his tight writing and clever dialogue would bring the world of "Firefly" to life and solidify Joss as geek royalty for life. The show, despite critical success, was doomed to a single season by the dreaded spectre of cancelation.
Most cancelled TV series tend to stay that way. A select few, buoyed by obsessive fans and DVD sales, have snuck their way back onto the 'tube ("Family Guy"). But only one has risen from the pits of ratings death to be made into a full-on movie extravaganza. That movie is "Serenity" and it is one fun romp of a sci-fi action flick.

Two and a half men

CBS' newest non-envelope-pushing drama, The Mentalist, is this season's only bona fide hit, now attracting crowds approaching American Idol levels. The network's Two and a Half Men is the country's most-watched sitcom -- and now averages more of the 18- to 49-year-old viewers who are the Holy Grail of the ad community than NBC's critically adored, envelope-pushing comedy The Office. Plus, CBS' Big Bang Theory, from Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre, averages more of those 18- to 49-year-olds than NBC's much-ballyhooed, trophy-winning, envelope-pushing, product-placing comedy 30 Rock.

Charlie Sheen Amazed By Fatherhood

Charlie Sheen thinks fatherhood is "pretty amazing".
The 'Two and a Half Men' actor - who welcomed twin sons Bob and Max into the world last Saturday (14.03.09) with his wife Brooke Mueller - loves being a dad to his newborn boys.
He said: "It's pretty amazing. Not a whole lot of sleep, but what parent does at this stage? There's adrenaline, excitement, fear."
Though the tots are fraternal twins, the 43-year-old admitted he is struggling to tell the boys apart.
He explained: "I can't tell! They're not identical, but at this stage they're similar enough."
Charlie has also admitted they made a last minute name change during the labour.
Speaking about their choice of names, he said: "They're very short and simple, easy to spell and remember. Bob is the same frontward and backward. I'm a fan of a short and simple name. Max was literally Nick until about a minute before he came out!"

Buffy and 24 Actor Goes Back To CBS

CBS is filling up its pilots with a shrink, a baby daddy, an organ transplant team and a trauma newbie.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer principal and 24 president D.B. Woodside has been cast opposite Skeet Ulrich in the drama pilot Back, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The story revolves around a man (Ulrich) who was reported missing after 9/11. He’s returned home eight years later to some confused folks, including his friends and family. Naturally, this will require some mixed emotions and sorting out, so a psychiatrist (Woodside) is called in.
Also on the network, Jon Foster has been cast as the younger man whom Jenna Elfman’s character sleeps with to Accidentally on Purpose (the title of the show) get pregnant. Foster also joins Ugly Betty’s Ashley Jensen, who has been cast.
Now that Showtime’s The L Word has shut its doors, Katherine Moennig is staying in the CBS family to play a self-destructive woman in the lung/heart transplant fellowship program, while Daniel Henney will play a well-to-do kidney/liver/pancreas transplant specialist. They join Moonlight’s Alex O’Loughlin on the show that revolves around organ transplants told from three points of view: the doctors, the donors and the recipients.
Finally, Miami Trauma has added Elisabeth Harnois as a first-year trauma resident, joining the Jeremy Northam and Richard Coyle who will portray doctors on the ensemble medical drama.

We heart tearjerkers----Television

Tyna’s picks: One of the most aww worthy episodes of the entire Buffy the Vampire Slayer run, The Prom never fails to leave me with happy tears. Buffy finally gets a little thanks and acceptance from her high school peers when the senior class presents her with the “Class Protector” Award. Viewing Jonathon’s sweet little speech and Buffy’s joy and surprise at the moment as Willow, Zander and Giles cheer her on in is perfect for when you’re in need of an uplifting cry!
Stef’s picks: TV makes me cry all the time! But it’s always the commercials that really get to me. I can barely watch this one for Pedigree where a shelter dog is passed up for a home. Oh boy, I’m crying just typing that! Luckily Pedigree donates a portion of each purchase to help real life shelter dogs find homes. And if this commercial makes even one person adopt a dog from a shelter, I can stand the tears.

Dollhouse

After its first episode aired last month, I wasn’t so sure about this show. But because it comes from the brilliant mind of Joss Whedon, I kept watching (in case you’re not a fangirl like me, Whedon is the man who gave us “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel” and “Firefly”).
And it’s paid off, as “Dollhouse” has quickly become must-see-TV.
The show centers on Echo (Eliza Dushku), a member of a highly illegal and underground group of people who have their personalities regularly wiped clean, so they can be imprinted with new ones at the request of wealthy and powerful clients.
Dushku, whom I never really liked much as Faith on “Buffy,” has done an admirable job of channeling Echo’s ever-shifting personalities. So far, we’ve seen her as a backup singer, a tough-as-nails safecracker, a fun-loving adventure seeker and a blind woman on a pilgrimage to join a cult.
Meanwhile, she’s got two men after her: a handsome FBI agent investigating the Dollhouse, which most believe to be an urban legend, and rogue doll Alpha, who escaped from the facility, but remains obsessed with her.
We haven’t even seen Alpha’s face yet, but he’s already become the show’s most intriguing character.
It can only get better from here.

New Knight Rider revs up for Sci Fi UK

The revival of Knight Rider and Dollhouse, the latest show from Buffy creator Joss Whedon, will air on Sci Fi in the UK.
Knight Rider features Val Kilmer as the voice of talking car KITT and Justin Bruening as Michael Knight, son of the character of the same name played by David Hasselhoff in the 1980s original.
It airs in the US on NBC, which owns the Sci Fi channel.
The series debuted in September in a high-profile mid-week slot following a two-hour special last February. An initial order for 22 episodes was cut back to 17 with an option to use the remaining five scripts if a second series is commissioned.
Dollhouse, which launched on Fox last month, stars Eliza Dushku – a former star of Buffy and Angel – as one of a group of people who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with new personas, including memory, muscle memory, skills, and language, for different assignments.
The 13-part series has had a troubled history, with Fox demanding that Whedon shoot a new pilot. It has met with a lukewarm reception from fans of his work but he has insisted that the series becomes closer to his original vision as it progresses.
NBC Universal Global Networks programming director Jon Farrar said of the acquisitions: "We're dedicated to offering our audience the most exciting content available and are thrilled to become the UK home for two such highly anticipated series. Knight Rider and Dollhouse both hail from fine pedigrees. The special effects in both series are genuinely show-stopping."
The series will be broadcast on Sci Fi from May.

Brian White Moves into Whedon's Cabin

The cast list for Joss Whedon’s new project Cabin in the Woods just got a little longer tonight.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Brian White is set to join Whedon’s film for the role of Truman, but no other details were released on either the specifics of White’s character or more skinny on just what kind of horror “The King of Sunnydale” (Buffy reference) is serving up when The Cabin in the Woods hits theaters next February.
White isn’t very well known to the genre crowd as this will be his first foray into horror, but male audiences will have two excellent chances to become acquainted with him since his next two projects - 12 Rounds (with WWE’s John Cena) and Fighting - are like catnip to those of the male persuasion.
Even though Whedon’s been pretty tight-lipped about Cabin, here’s hoping more solid details trickle in sooner rather than later!

'Sophie' on ABC Family

The sitcom is 'Will and Grace' meets 'Two and a Half Men' and a whole lot of clichés.
By MARY McNAMARA, Television Critic March 23, 2009
Canadian actress Natalie Brown (actress) has really great eyebrows. Also, a lovely smile. In fact, she's very pretty all around, and no doubt has a bright and shining future. There, I've said something nice.“Sophie,” the ABC Family comedy in which she stars, on the other hand, is painful to watch.
Here is a quick quiz for anyone currently, or hoping to be, a member of the television industry: No script should ever require an eight-months-pregnant single woman to lie in bed on her back delivering weepy monologues to her gay best friend after her dastardly boyfriend takes off with a blond starlet who was also her best friend because: a) it violates the FCC's three-cliché-per-scene limit, b) Rupert Everett and Madonna already did this and look what happened to them, c) it is physically impossible for an eight-months-pregnant woman to lie on her back for any length of time without asphyxiating herself, or d) all of the above. The pilot starts out with Sophie, pregnant in that could-you-hold-this-basketball-while-I-slip-on-my-really-cute-snuggy way that drives so many female television viewers to drink, visiting a fortune teller. Unfortunately, this fortune teller is so High Hoodoo that the NAACP may want to get involved. Eyes all but rolling back in his head, he informs her that she is about to have her worst year ever and that just when she thinks she is at the bottom, she will realize she has just begun to fall. You know, sometimes those writers make it too easy to be a critic. In short order, we meet her BFF Matt (Jeff Geddis), a doctor mercifully free of standard gay conceits, except, of course, the neurotic best girlfriend. He knows Sophie's boyfriend, Rick (Sebastian Spence), is a rat, and moments later so do we. Not only does Rick unceremoniously dump Sophie and her basketball for the above mentioned actress, he ruins Sophie's business too. See, Sophie runs her late father's talent agency, and Rick was also her partner. Off he goes, in a hail of shattered framed head shots, taking the client list and even the secretary with him. Only aging diva Estelle (Sara Botsford in many scarves and bracelets) and her requisite smart-mouth Chinese daughter remain. Poor Sophie. Now there is nothing wrong with the idea of a young single mother and her gay best friend amusingly attempting to raise a child, and each other, while balancing work and romance, not to mention Estelle. It's "Will and Grace" meets "Two and a Half Men," and frankly, it's surprising no one has tried it sooner. It's possible "Sophie" could improve in subsequent episodes -- only one was made available for review -- but if the opening credit sequence is any indication, chances are not good. Meanwhile, "Roommates," which also premieres tonight on ABC Family, was not available for review. Make of this what you will.

The Couch Potato: Letting go

OK everyone, it’s confession time.I’ve given up watching the new “90210.”For about a month, the last three new episodes sat on my DVR, mocking me every time I scrolled through the list of recorded programs.Never in the right mood to cue it up, I’d finally had enough. It was time to say goodbye to Ethan, Annie and the rest of West Bev’s most recent inhabitants (I think I’ll miss you the most, Rob Estes). As we speak, those episodes have been deleted, and the season pass is cancelled. The sad part is that “90210” isn’t the only offender (though it is probably the only one that will be getting the old heave-ho).It’s embarrassing to admit how far behind I’ve fallen in my TV viewing. Right now, my DVR is clogged with four episodes each of “Desperate Housewives” and “Damages,” three “Gossip Girls,” and a whopping seven installments of “Heroes.” Seven.I promise I’ll catch up soon, if only to restore my good, TV-watching name.In the meantime, here are some thoughts on what I have been watching over the past month:
PrivilegedIt was, well, a privilege to watch this great show, which aired its season finale in February. The main attraction was Joanna Garcia’s Megan, who has officially been inducted into the Cool Female Character Hall of Fame (already populated by the likes of Buffy Summers, Veronica Mars and Lorelai and Rory Gilmore). It would be easy for the neurotic Megan to be annoying, but she never is, and that’s thanks to Garcia’s charm. While I’m unhappy Megan and Will called it quits in the finale —and that Megan acted completely out of character by hooking up with a stranger — it does set things up nicely for more drama next season. And there better be a next season.Dancing With the Stars/The BachelorI’ve stayed mum about “The Bachelor’s” conclusion for too long, mostly because I needed time to calm down and rein in my absolute disgust with Jason. But after two weeks, those feelings remain. What kind of a guy dumps a woman — in this case, Jason’s fiancĂ©e, Melissa, whom he proposed to in New Zealand — on television in front of millions of viewers?Jason claims the producers didn’t give him a choice, but I’m not buying that for one minute. He could have and should have said no to humiliating a woman he supposedly, at one time, loved. If that were ever even true. The silver lining to all this is that our girl Melissa has totally rebounded as a replacement contestant on “Dancing With the Stars.” The former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader seems perfectly at home and is, in fact, thriving in the ballroom. I’m rooting for her every quickstep of the way.
DollhouseAfter its first episode aired last month, I wasn’t so sure about this show. But because it comes from the brilliant mind of Joss Whedon, I kept watching (in case you’re not a fangirl like me, Whedon is the man who gave us “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel” and “Firefly”).And it’s paid off, as “Dollhouse” has quickly become must-see-TV.The show centers on Echo (Eliza Dushku), a member of a highly illegal and underground group of people who have their personalities regularly wiped clean, so they can be imprinted with new ones at the request of wealthy and powerful clients.Dushku, whom I never really liked much as Faith on “Buffy,” has done an admirable job of channeling Echo’s ever-shifting personalities. So far, we’ve seen her as a backup singer, a tough-as-nails safecracker, a fun-loving adventure seeker and a blind woman on a pilgrimage to join a cult.Meanwhile, she’s got two men after her: a handsome FBI agent investigating the Dollhouse, which most believe to be an urban legend, and rogue doll Alpha, who escaped from the facility, but remains obsessed with her.We haven’t even seen Alpha’s face yet, but he’s already become the show’s most intriguing character. It can only get better from here.
American IdolI’ve finally accepted that I will never feel about any of this season’s contestants the way I did about David Cook last year. He rarely faltered, giving one inspired performance after another, while this season’s contestants have been anything but consistent. Then there are the judges, whose critiques have baffled me more than ever this time around. My current favorite is nice guy Kris Allen, whose take on Garth Brooks’ “To Make You Feel My Love” was pretty darn near perfect this week.
The CloserI would just like to thank the writers for letting Brenda and Fritz get hitched without incident. We’ve all seen too many stalled or interrupted nuptials on television, and it was refreshing to see one couple, especially one as cute and compelling as those two, make it work — and in true Brenda fashion, as she and Fritz both took the time between the ceremony and reception to wrap up their respective cases. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

More 'Two and a Half Men,' 'Big BangTheory'

Two and a Half Men” will be around until at least the 2011-12 season. Whoopee!
CBS and Warner Bros. Television made a deal that renews TV's top-rated sitcom (how it’s No. 1 I don’t know) and “The Big Bang Theory,” which will be around until through the 2010-11 season.
Two and a Half Men” is currently in its sixth season, and averages about 15 million viewers a week, according to CBS. It stars Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer, Angus T. Jones, Marin Hinkle, Conchata Ferrell and Holland Taylor. The two-season-old “Big Bang Theory” averages about 10 million viewers a week. Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar star.

Charlie Sheen Can’t Tell his Boys Apart

Apparently, Charlie Sheen is now the proud pappa of two twin boys, who were both born last Saturday. I say apparently because I had to search long and hard for announcements of the birth - I didn’t even know that it had happened! Because I did actually know that his show, Two and a Half Men, had been extended to 2012, the fact that his birth announcement wasn’t just as broadcasted tells me that most people feel about Charlie Sheen the same as I do - okay actor, terrible person who no one is really too interested in. I actually only found out that Charlie and Brooke had welcomed the new additions by reading one of the most stupidest quotes I’ve ever read. It did come out of the horse’s mouth so, I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised at the idiocy of it but I guess Charlie is having problems telling his boys apart. Yes, they’re twins. No, they’re not identical. Duh! From Celebrity Baby Scoop,
“Although they’re not identical, Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller’s newborn fraternal twin boys are still managing to fool their dad.
“I can’t tell! They’re not identical, but at this stage they’re similar enough.” Sheen, 43, told Entertainment Tonight from the set of Two and a Half Men just days after wife Brooke Mueller Sheen, 31, delivered twin sons Max and Bob. Charlie said he likes short and sweet names: “[Their names] are very short and simple – easy to spell and remember,” Sheen said. “Bob is the same frontward and backward. I’m a fan of a short and simple name. Max was literally Nick until about a minute before he came out.”
Charlie went on to say that life at their LA home is tiring yet phenomenal. “It’s pretty amazing. Not a whole lot of sleep, but what parent does at this stage? There’s adrenaline, excitement, fear.”
I have two issues with this. The first being that, is Charlie Sheen really so stupid that he can’t tell two kids, who look different, apart? I would totally be able to understand this with identical twins but fraternal?? Come on, Charlie, let’s be a little quicker on the uptake, shall we? I am also a huge fan of celebrities, or anyone really, who gives their new baby (or babies) nice, normal names that don’t leave people wondering, “What the hell were they thinking?” While Bob and Max are both pretty normal names, BOB is NOT a good name for a BABY!! It’s not even Robert! Nope, just Bob. Stupid people.

CBS Renews Monday Night Comedy Double-Act

Two and a Half Men” and “The Big Bang Theory” receive early pick-ups. According to Reuters, CBS has renewed their juggernaut comedy shows, Two and a Half Men dvd and The Big Bang Theory. Both sitcoms are produced by Warner Bros. and the deal comes hot on the heels of an announcement that the companies have settled their $49 million lawsuit over Men license fees and production-cost reimbursements. The Charlie Sheen comedy, Two and a Half Men , has been renewed for three years through the 2011-12 season, with geektastic sophomore effort The Big Bang Theory picked up for at least two more years through the 2010-11 season. Chuck Lorre is the co-creator and showrunner of both series, which have given CBS consistently strong ratings on Monday nights this season. Unlike other networks where audience numbers are declining, the Monday comedy hour on CBS is up 13 percent in viewers compared to last season. Rumors of the renewals hit the Web earlier this month when Lorre told the casts of both shows about the impending pick-ups. Lorre co-created Two and a Half Men dvd box set with Lee Aronsohn and The Big Bang Theory with Bill Prady.

Laughs, and work, come easily to her

She's the statuesque blonde with the pixie haircut who's been cracking you up for years. Whether playing Steve Carrell's lascivious boss in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" or a dotty dog owner in "Best in Show" or running amok through primetime on everything from "Monk" to "Two and a Half Men," Jane Lynch knows how to find the funny. Tomorrow night at 10:30 p.m. the Second City alum will no doubt be putting us in stitches once again when she stars as crazy Constance in "Party Down," a new series on Starz that chronicles the trials and tribulations of a Los Angeles catering company staffed by Hollywood hopefuls. She also plays Julia Child's sister, opposite Meryl Streep as Child, in the upcoming romantic comedy "Julie & Julia." We chatted with the disarming comic actress about funny business and her familiar face.

CBS renews "Men," "Big Bang"

CBS has closed a deal to renew the Warner Bros. TV-produced comedies "Two and a Half Men" and "The Big Bang Theory," as the two companies also settled their $49 million lawsuit.
"Men" has been picked up for three more years, through the 2011-12 season, while sophomore "Big Bang" has been ordered for two more years, through the 2010-2011 season.
News of the renewals leaked earlier this month when Chuck Lorre, co-creator/showrunner of both series, told the casts about the pending pickups.
Slowing down the process was WBTV's outstanding $49 million breach-of-contract suit against CBS over "Men" license fees and production-cost reimbursements.
Sources said that the case has been settled, with the long-term renewals factoring into the settlement.
"Men" and "Theory" are the main driving forces behind CBS' ratings success on Monday night this season. While most broadcast series' viewership is declining, CBS' Monday-night comedy lineup is up 13 percent in viewers from last season.
Lorre co-created "Men" with Lee Aronsohn and "Big Bang" with Bill Prady

Ira Glass and This American Life coming to big screen

Baltimore native Ira Glass brings his This American Life public radio troupe back to the big screen next month for a two-hour stage production that will be seen in theaters nationwide -- including three in the Baltimore area.
Here's the way the promoters describe it -- and the way to get tickets. (Note the scheduled musical performance by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.):
On Thursday, April 23rd 8:00 p.m. (EDT) This American Life – Live! will return to movie screens with a live simulcast performance of the radio show. Originating from the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts at New York University, the event will take place in more than 400 movie theaters nationwide.
Just like in the weekly radio broadcast, Glass and several show contributors will perform stories, all centered on a theme. The evening’s lineup will include This American Life contributors Dan Savage, Starlee Kine, Mike Birbiglia, David Rakoff and Dave Hill, plus a cartoon by Chris Ware, additional visuals by Arthur Jones, and a special musical performance by Joss Whedon, creator of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Together they will perform a two-hour, live stage version of the radio show, centered on the theme “Return to the Scene of the Crime.”

What Is Buffy's Best Season Ever?

Thanks to a heads up from my friends at ONTDI, became aware today that my favorite TV show ever -- "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" -- has made its best season -- three --, So naturally I've spent all day watching old episodes trying to decide which is my favorite.
"The Prom" is an obvious contender because of Jonathan's savior speech. The finale also has some great moments -- my fave is the reveal that all the students are working with Buffy. "Doppelgangland" nabs the runner-up slot thanks to that "evil, skanky and kinda gay" speech. For me, the stellar third season's crowning achievement is "The Wish."
Not only were we introduced to Anya but we also got to spend more time with the amazing Vampire Willow. I always love when shows flip your expectations on their head and nowhere did that happen more than in this ep's big climax.
Oz kills Willow, Buffy kills Xander and doesn't bat an eye when Angel dies. Watching these characters have no regard for what they mean to one another in another life is amazing!
