Seven wins as Ten’s MasterChef fades

Normal service was resumed last night with Seven’s first win in what is becoming an unusual TV ratings week.

Seven had four of the top five rating shows and a 29.3% peak share, according to preliminary ratings from OzTam. Nine had 26.2%; Ten 24.8%; ABC 15.4% and SBS 4.3%

Meanwhile, the second night of Ten’s MasterChef Australia did less well without the help of the Biggest Loser, pulling in an audience of just under 1.1m - down 300,000 on Monday - which wasn’t enough to put it in the top 15 shows.

However, Ten’s strong start means that it is still well ahead for the week to date with an audience share of 29.1%, ahead of Seven’s 25.6% and Nine’s 25.4%.

Seven will be hoping to close that gap with the 7.30pm debut of Thank God You’re Here likely to bite into Ten’s audience for the third night of MasterChef.

Top ten shows for Tuesday:

1.Seven News - Seven 1.6m
2.Today Tonight - Seven 1.4m
3.NCIS - Ten 1.4m
4.RSPCA Animal Rescue - Seven 1.3m
5.Find My Family - Seven 1.3m
6.Bondi Rescue - Ten 1.3m
7.A Current Affair - Nine 1.3m
8.Two and a Half Men 7pm - Nine 1.2m
9.Two and a Half Men 8.30pm - Nine 1.2m
10 Years Younger in 10 Days - Seven 1.2m
Meanwhile, the heavily promoted new series of Australia’s Next Top Model had its debut on Fox8 last night with an excellent rating for pay TV. Across Fox8 and Fox8+2 it scored an avergae audience of just over 300,000.

I Love Television

Right you are, Tiffani! I would make an awesome network executive. (And while I already have a personal assistant taking care of my filthy needs, I get bored easily and will keep your résumé on file.) The problem with most net execs is they're TOO SOFT. Like old people, TV shows want to be treated "respectfully" and given the opportunity to "die with dignity." Well SCREW YOU, TV shows! In case you didn't know, it's "upfront season"—that time of year when shows get picked up, renewed, or canceled—and if I were an executive, I'd be flushing a ton of shows right down the poop can!

For example? I'd keep NBC's The Office and 30 Rock—but as for Law & Order? POOP-CAN IT!! That show reminds me of my Great-Aunt Beatrice, who keeps repeating the same boring stories, while occasionally disappearing for three days at a time, only to be found wandering nude through a McDonald's drive-through. Another NBC show that needs to go is Parks and Recreation. I'm sorry, but I tried it—and if The Office is like Froot Loops, Parks and Recreation is Fruity Hoops. POOP-CAN IT!!

Stranger PersonalsLovelab
Coraco: Women Seeking Men Lustlab
Yes, Please Lovelab
gear99: Men Seeking Women As for ABC, I'm happy to keep watching Lost and The Unusuals for another season or two, but I have three words for Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, and Ugly Betty: POOP... CAN... IT!! These shows are a triple threat of TERRIBLE and the festering mouth-sores of network television.

And don't even get me started on CBS! There's not a single show I'd save. I hate Cold Case, I hate Without a Trace, I hate The Mentalist, I hate Two and a Half Men, I hate all the CSIs, I hate Ghost Whisperer, I really fawking hate Numb3rs, and yes, I also hate How I Met Your Mother. In fact, the only show I would even consider saving is Friday Night Lights. Huh? That's on NBC? Oh. THEN POOP-CAN IT!!

And if someone asks me, "Should Fox poop-can Dollhouse?" My answer is "YES!" However! The best part of that show is when all the "dolls" take coed showers together. So what they need to do is figure out a way to solve all the mysteries while keeping these sexy people nude, soapy, and in the shower. Or just get rid of the mysteries all together, and change the name to "Sexy Nude Community Coed Showers." Otherwise? SHOOT IT DOWN THE POOP CAN!

Naturally, the CW network is perfect in every way, with such awesome unfawkwithable shows as Gossip Girl, 90210, Supernatural, and Smallville—and is therefore exempt from any poop-canning.

IN CONCLUSION! If I were a network executive? You would only have eight shows to choose from. And without enough advertising revenue to support the television industry, it would quickly collapse. People would then be forced to read books, and—THAT WAS YOUR PLAN ALL ALONG, WASN'T IT?!?

Grand finales? TV shows set to finish season in dramatic style

“The Fork in the Outlet.”

That’s the quirky code name producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have bestowed upon their super-secret season finale of “Lost.” And, of course, curious fans are already on the case _ frantically trying to de-code it and give it some kind of literal meaning.

I prefer to think it simply refers to the level of shock we’re going to feel while watching the episode. You know: Stick a utensil in an electrical socket and you get a hefty jolt.

And isn’t that the way we like it? After bonding for months with our favorite shows, we crave surprising, even shocking, developments in our season-enders. We want stunning cliff-hangers, emotional send-offs and electrifying triumphs. Basically, we want to feel all tingly.

With that in mind, here’s a list of finales we’re anticipating as May sweeps unfolds (Warning: Some spoilers ahead):

_”Scrubs” (May 6, ABC): Count ‘em _ more than 50 past guest stars return as J.D. (Zach Braff) bids farewell to Sacred Heart. But before departing, he hopes to score a hug from Dr. Cox and learn the Janitor’s real name. It also could be the end of the line for this oddball sitcom.

_”Lost” (May 13, ABC): Mind-blowing, jaw-dropping finales are a matter of habit with this creepy series, and so we’re expecting nothing less. Word is we’ll finally meet Jacob, the island’s spiritual leader, and there will be at least one major death. Of course, on “Lost,” dead doesn’t necessarily mean dead-and-gone.

_”Bones” (May 14, Fox): The season-ender revolves around a murder at a nightclub. But the real news is that, after four seasons of teasing us, Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) finally hop in the sack. Can their relationship survive?

_”Grey’s Anatomy (May 14, ABC): There’s more misery for Izzy (Katherine Heigl) as the cancer-stricken doc contemplates whether to undergo a risky surgery. Meanwhile, George (T.R. Knight) delivers some stunning news that could pave the way for his exit from Seattle Grace.

_”CSI: NY” (May 14, CBS): Producers have already let it out of the bag that a member of Mac’s team will be killed in the opening minutes of the episode. And if that isn’t enough, the life of another CSI is threatened. Brutal.

_”Desperate Housewives” (May 17, ABC): Can creator Marc Cherry top his dramatic flash-forward finale of last season? We doubt it, but after watching poor Edie meet her tragic end, we’re at least hoping that the despicable Dave (Neal McDonough) gets an appropriate comeuppance.

_”24″ (May 18, Fox): It’s a good bet that super agent Jack Bauer (Keifer Sutherland) will survive yet another hellish day (plans are already in the works for next season in New York). But what kind of explosive finish is in store _ and what will the final body count be? Look for the return of Jack’s daughter, Kim (Elisha Cuthbert).

_”Dancing with the Stars” (May 19, ABC): Break out the spandex and the sequins and brace yourself for another over-bloated celebration of ballroom gymnastics. But after all that work (and all those injuries) shouldn’t the winners get something more than a gaudy disco-ball trophy?

_”NCIS” (May 19, CBS): Can our hearts take it? Last year they stunned us by killing off Jenny Shepard (Lauren Holly). Now, producers are promising to drop another bombshell. Details are scarce, but the network’s logline says Gibbs (Mark Harmon) will be forced to make “a decision that sends shockwaves through NCIS.”

_”90210″ (May 19, The CW): It’s prom night and you know what that means: Bring on the drama. We’re told that Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) goes into labor during the big dance and that escalating tensions between Annie (Shenae Grimes) and Naomi (AnnaLynne McCord) lead to “drastic consequences.”

_”American Idol” (May 20, Fox): Is Adam Lambert already a stone-cold lock? Let’s hope not, because we yearn for at least a modicum of suspense in the moments before the confetti drops and the winner launches into a treacly ballad. Another reason to watch: It could be Paula Abdul’s “Idol” swan song.

_”The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (May 29, NBC): This send-off lost some oomph with the news that Leno will return next fall with a prime-time show. Still, after a long and triumphant run, he is ceding some of the most coveted turf in television to Conan O’Brien. Expect some big-name guests, lots of vintage clips and maybe a few tears.

MasterChef no souffle

AFTER its big Monday debut, sandwiched between the final episodes of The Biggest Loser, Channel Ten's reality series MasterChef Australia failed to entice 370,000 fickle viewers to stick around on Tuesday night.

The second episode averaged 1 million viewers and was beaten in the 7pm timeslot by Two And A Half Men on Nine and Home And Away and RSPCA Animal Rescue on Seven. Meanwhile, Two And A Half Men continues its baffling run of popularity. Nine screened three episodes of the US sitcom on Tuesday night, of which two were repeats. The 7pm repeat averaged 1.2 million, beating Home And Away. The 8.30pm new episode also averaged 1.2 million while the 9pm repeat averaged 1.1 million - beating All Saints, which screened in the timeslot vacated by the top-rating Packed To The Rafters. Seven's bosses must be sweating about the return of Rafters.

Nevertheless, Seven won the night with 29.3 per cent of the prime-time audience - thanks largely to its news and current affairs line-up - from Nine with 26.2 per cent and Ten with 24.8 per cent.

In subscription-TV land the first episode of the fifth series of Australia's Next Top Model, featuring new host Sarah Murdoch, broke the record for a Foxtel launch with an average national audience of 302,000, a 25 per cent increase on the last series.

Buffy Moments: Buffy Kills Angel

Probably one of the most memorable moments for anyone who was devoted to the show since the beginning. When Angel turned evil in the middle of season 2 it was a huge shock, but not as big of a shock as when Buffy had to kill him, right after Willow recursed him with a soul. Angelus was gone, Angel was back, but Acathala had opened his big fat mouth already and only the blood of he who opened it would close it. So the slayer had to do her thing and save the world, so with a kiss and a “close your eyes” she sends her confused love to hell. I remember crying hysterically in when I first saw this episode in the 7th grade, I even wore the same khaki pants black v-neck combo and hair do Buffy wore in it to some party the following Friday, considered my 12 year old world rocked by the event. Of course hell would spit Angel back up as soon as you can say hi season 3! But Buffy killing the love of her life remains my most memorable Buffy moment.

Missing a ‘Star,’ ‘Dancing’ Still Wins

Even without the injured contestant Melissa Rycroft, ABC’s 90-minute installment of “Dancing With the Stars” lifted the network to No. 1 on Monday night, with an average audience of 19.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen’s estimates. CBS was runner-up over all, winning the 10 p.m. hour with “CSI: Miami” (12 million), which outperformed ABC’s “Castle” (8.4 million) and NBC’s “Medium” (6.7 million) in its time slot. CBS’s comedy lineup also remained strong, including “Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set” (14.1 million) and “Rules of Engagement” (11.3 million), which bested ABC’s new sitcom “Surviving Suburbia” (9.9 million). Fox ranked third for with “House” (11.4 million) and “24” (10.6 million), while NBC lagged behind in fourth with “Chuck” (6.1 million) and “Heroes” (6.4 million).

"Two and a Half Men" Demonstrates the Creepiness of "The Wink"

As we've touched on before, "the wink" is not to be attempted by anyone under the age of 65. And even once you resemble a grandparent, you should still exercise caution and practice keen self-awareness. For example, Dr. Pat Allen is definitely over 65, and if she winked at me, I would probably cry.

Yes, the wink is not only unsexy, it is downright creepy. Hence the wink on last night's "Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set" that changed an uncomfortable dinner into the most awkward double date ever.

The Bi-Curious Case of Buffy Summers

In last month’s GLAAD Media Awards, Buffy: Season Eight won in the Outstanding Comic Book category. Well, it’s one gay-friendly book. There’s longtime lez witch Willow, whose girlfriend is Slayer Kennedy. Ken is there on the cover with another Slayer, Buffy’s two-night stand Satsu.

It’s been declared a few times by the characters (and writers) that Buffy’s still straight and she’s experimenting. To paraphrase Kennedy’s words, while Buffy can give her body to Satsu, her heart is something she can’t.

Yikes. Sounds like denial, or just an excuse to keep people at a distance. On the one hand, it’s good that Buffy’s open to just getting it on with a girl; on the other, identifying as straight instead of bisexual is like pretending to oneself even when everybody else already knows. Still, it’s more complicated than that; maybe she just doesn’t want to limit herself to what the labels traditionally imply. That, or she’s just going through an Anne Heche-ish phase.

Well, maybe Buffy’s done with Satsu, and all girls for that matter. Or, maybe not. In any case, the top Slayer’s sex life is just a fraction of the stories. It’s good to see her developing further, in a comic book where everything that happens is canon.

Emma Caulfield talks 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' reunion

Emma Caulfield may be moving on from her "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" roots, but that doesn't mean the former Anya Emerson doesn't think about her old sci-fi friends. In fact, during a WPIX interview about Caulfield's latest film "Timer," she reveals that a Buffy reunion film is an idea that has been "circling."

Caulfield goes on to say she keeps in touch with her "Buffy" co-stars and even though her character died in the TV series, "anything is possible" given the fantasy genre of the show. After all, if Buffy can come back from the other side, why can't Anya? But see the interview for yourself and make up your own mind...

Merlin’s wizard wheeze

Despite his initial excitement at the role, it was nothing compared to the first read-through when he came face to face with Anthony Head, star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
“We were sort of gathered in this church in West London and I turned up and just sort of saw the faces of the people involved, one of which was Anthony Head,” James says.

“Now I’d been a Buffy fan and when I saw him, my jaw dropped. And I said to someone, ‘What the hell is he doing here?’ And they said, ‘He’s playing your dad.’ It was unbelievable. I kind of went up and said something stupid like, ‘By the way, I’m going to tell you this now, I’m a Buffy fan so the first few things I say to you are going to be complete nonsense’.”

The BBC commissioned a second season of the show after the first aired in the UK last year to an average audience of over six million.

Falling into the category of television that the whole family can enjoy together, much like Robin Hood, which airs on the ABC, it comes as a surprise that we won’t be watching this show on Aunty.

“I know Australian television quite well, and, yeah, the ABC in a way is more like the BBC so it’s interesting that Ten has picked it up,” Capps says. “I think Network Ten realises, in this commercial world, you have to appeal to a younger audience as well as the older audience, because they’re your future viewers.”

"Chuck" Tv Series stars lead 400 fans to Subway to save show

Chuck stars Zachary Levi and Adam Baldwin came up with a unique way to help the fortunes of their on-the-bubble show by taking a fan’s suggestion and leading 400 convention goers to a Birmingham Subway outlet to show their leading advertiser that Chuck deserves to survive.

Falling ratings have threatened to cancel the show, which features a sales assistant whose brain is accidentally loaded with government secrets, but fan Wendy Farrington had the unique idea of getting fans to follow the money and show the sandwich franchise Subway that the show they were sponsoring had an audience. She presented the idea to Zachary Levi who plays the titular character Chuck Bartowski at Starfury conventions T1 event in Birmingham, UK. Levi and Adam Baldwin (Casey) then asked the hundreds of con attendees to follow them on en masse to the local Subway.

Levi, who described the show as “On the good side of the bubble”, even got behind the counter and helped out the besieged staff of the outlet in the Birmingham NEC exhibition centre, staying until the very last fan was served.

We were in attendance at the foody flash mob and have these pictures from other sandwich and Chuck-hungry fans.

dollhouse: haunted

Whedonesque line of the night: "Illusions aren't worthless. They are at the heart of most relationships." (I always wonder if the writers who write things like this have wives or husbands and if their significant others are watching when they say such dispirited anti-love statements?)

I really HATED the A plot-line of this episode, it hearkens back to the initial Bionic Woman-y feel of the show. And the acting. Oh the acting. The actors struggling with the characters within this funeral-dysfunctional-family-reunion cliche of a story arc were so unsatisfactorily melodramatic it made me feel rather yurksome. (And I called the killer, immediately, did you?)

However, the B line was AWESOME. Penikett/Ballard who I found wooden last week was BRILLIANT this week in the yummily complex Melly-Ballard pairing. I don't think I've ever quite seen a romantic pairing like this before. It has astonishing dramatic potential and Penikett (unlike last week) did not disappoint. Sometimes Penikett does steely stoic resolve with just the right amount of volcanic eruption potential surface deep. And sometimes he's just doing a bad Clint Eastwood interpretation. He seems to lack a sense of humor--unlike Nathan Fillion, who. Well. Swoon. (I'm watching Castle right now, which is a lame Pride and Prejudice meets Moonlighting sort of deal, but it has Fillion so yeah, I'm there, even if I'm on the laptop the whole time its on because it bores me too much).

Topher's storyline was rather touching this week--and real. Ah, Nerds and those who love Nerds--how real was that? I mean seriously. Almost too real for comfort. The motif of loneliness in this show continues to be just achingly poetic.

I don't really see an escape from the Bionic Woman-y of it all, so I try to just roll with it--but again, you are asked to attach to characters who only exist for one episode, and actors are asked to play them with very little time for development. Firefly escaped this modality--by which I mean switching back and forth from the B line of character arc and the A line plot of the episode--simply because I think the situation was just more interesting, intergalactic space outlaws in a Gilligan's Island floating tank in space, provide much meatier stories to explore than the possible stories to explore in Dollhouse.

Buffy did not escape this same plodding/plotting trap as Dollhouse--nor did Angel. I often found myself really, really BORED with the main stories of the episodes, simply because I wanted to see advancement in the character arcs and larger B line stories. The episodes that came to some sort of dramatic apex (like episode 6 of Dollhouse) when B line BECOMES A line are what I lived for. (I'm thinking in particular of "Becoming" in Buffy Season 2). If Joss plans a limited run (I heard him and Dushku cite a developed five season story arc) I'm sort of wondering why he couldn't just push all of the assignments to the B line and let the overall story of the Dollhouse and its central players play out on the A line. Then again, I think Joss knows better than anyone that the perception of quality is increased by your desire for it. So he's a naughty, naughty withholder. (Note to self: Joss as Catholic school girl? Discuss.)

Stay tuned for tomorrow's discussion of the model of consciousness advanced in Dollhouse. I had to cut it out of this post because it was becoming the Post that Ate My Blog. I need more time to pare down that discussion.

Charlie Sheen & Cast Dish on New Episode of 'Two and a Half Men'

ET is there as Charlie Sheen and fellow cast members give the inside scoop on tonight's episode in which Alan (Jon Cryer) lets Chelsea (Jennifer Bini Taylor) fix him up on a blind date with one of her friends -- which turns out to be Rose (Melanie Lynskey).

Charlie tells ET's Mark Steines that hilarity ensues when his character hatches a plan with Alan to deal with the "blind date," but the plan goes horribly wrong. "Two and a Half Men" airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

Watch the video to also hear Charlie talk about what to expect in the show's future as the character of Jake (Angus T. Jones) gets older and starts driving and dating.

Jon Cryer also reveals that despite Charlie's exciting and sometimes draining lifestyle change after the birth of his twin sons, his co-star doesn't seem to have changed much. "He has been remarkably calm through the whole thing," Jon says, adding of the twins, "they're SO cute --super cute."

CBS, Facebook Create User Link

CBS Corp. April 27 said it signed a deal with Facebook that allows users to connect to CBS.com via the popular social networking site.

Facebook members who follow CBS shows such as “How I Met Your Mother,” “Two And A Half Men,” “The Amazing Race,” “The Big Bang Theory” and the CSI franchise, and contribute or interact on CBS.com, can link their actions back to Facebook, enabling them to share their CBS.com experiences with their entire social network.

“Television is a social experience, and [now] it’s faster and easier than ever for CBS television fans to share their thoughts and reactions about their favorite shows with their friends and family,” said Bill Binenstock, VP with CBS.com.

As more media companies align themselves with social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace.com and others, concerns regarding user privacy are emerging.

Last week a federal judge in Dallas allowed a class-action breach of privacy lawsuit against Blockbuster Inc. to continue.

In the case, the plaintiff alleged her movie rental history was posted on her Facebook page without permission.

Blockbuster Nov. 7, 2007, launched a movie rental search application on the popular social Web site. Called Movie Clique, the platform allows users and Blockbuster subscribers to rent movies as well as create rental wish lists, already-seen lists and all-time favorites, without leaving Facebook.

Separately, CBS Interactive, a unit of CBS Corp., said its online properties, which include CBS.com, in March surpassed 200 million unique users for the first time, making it the eighth-largest Internet property, according to comScore.

Principal drivers also included CBSSports.com via March Madness college basketball coverage, GameSpot.com, Last.fm, CNET and TheInsider.com.

The TV Land Awards: 12 Hours of Self-Congratulation

The Neil Patrick Harris-hosted TV Land Awards aired last night, and the show was... well, it was too damn long, is what it was! Almost two and a half hours? I'm not saying there weren't some entertaining moments in there, but overall the thing was brutal, I don't care how fierce Katey Sagal looked (really, really fierce, but that's not the point). Here are my personal bids for best and worst moments of the night.

Best:
-- The opener, in which NPH was transplanted into classic TV shows wasn't really knee-slapping hilarious, but it was pretty delightful. The Rod Serling eyebrows made me laugh, and his Charles Nelson Reilly impression isn't nearly as good as Alec Baldwin's, but I loved it anyway.
-- "I thank you, and my mustache thanks you." -- Tom Selleck.
-- The Knots Landing clip reel. "You. Are. Suchaslut." had me rolling in my living room. I've never seen the show (it was just slightly before my time), but I definitely want to now.
-- Alan Alda was the Jack Nicholson of the night, grinning adorably and laughing big at everybody's jokes. He was loving every minute of that show! He was bizzaro me!
-- Don Rickles' acceptance speech. That guy is always funny, and always awesome.
-- The Married... With Children reunion. Christina Applegate was cute as a button, Katey Sagal looked incredible, and it really was nice to see them with Ed O'Neil and David Faustino again. I have to admit it got to my sentimental side. Insert obligatory "OMG Ted McGinley was there and the show wasn't cancelled mid-broadcast!" joke here.

Worst:
-- Where the hell was JTT? A Home Improvement reunion without JTT is a Home Improvement reunion not worth having. It was like when Genesis reunited without Peter Gabriel.
-- The running fake blogging gag. Even NPH seemed to regret it. The jokes weren't terrible groaners, but they weren't terribly funny either, and they slowed down the show.
-- Oh my god, the Sid and Marty Krofft tribute. I know people always say things are like an acid trip, and that's a very easy joke to make, but I just don't know how else to describe it! It was so long and weird, and there was a handwalker and a Barry Williams and a green squid with leaves on top and everything! Thank god for Amy Poehler's "That happened, right?" comment about how insane it was; I was afraid I was alone on that.
-- Alan Alda is awesome (as I stated above), but him grabbing MASH's Hot Lips and kissing her was cringe-tastic. Nobody likes when men do that on awards show stages, Alda!
-- Earth, Wind & Fire is for crappy wedding DJs only. Why were they there?
-- The whole premise of the show, which is just basically awarding shows that have already been endlessly rewarded in some way or another. ER has like 6,000 Emmys, MASH is universally regarded as one of the best and most important shows in the history of television, Two and a Half Men is the biggest sitcom around, and I took an entire class on Married... With Children in college. It was just a little superfluous, is all. Harmless fun, but also unnecessary. And way too long.

Your thoughts on the show? Leave 'em in the comments.

On Tonight: Cherokee Story, 'Chuck,' 'Heroes' Finales

When John Ridge, scion of a prominent Cherokee family came to Connecticut to attend the Foreign Mission School in Cornwall in 1818, he excelled in his lessons but wouldn't adjust to the winters here.

Sarah Bird Northrup helped nurse him to health and the two got married. Though Thomas Jefferson had predicted a union of the Native Americans and the new Americans in a short-lived period of truce, the people of Cornwall didn't feel the same.

"The people of Cornwall feel indignant of this transaction," the local paper said at the time. Or as they report in "Trail of Tears," the third in the series of "We Shall Remain" films on "American Experience" (CPTV, 9 p.m.), they wanted the girl whipped, the Cherokee hung and the mother drowned.

The couple got out of Connecticut in a hurry. It's part of the fascinating history of the Cherokee told in the film by Chris Eyre and Mark Zwonitzer, who had one of the most advanced tribes in North America and whose sovereignty was recognized by the Supreme Court, only to be ignored by Andrew Jackson.

April showers bring May finales (and so do unseasonable heatwaves). Finales come tonight for both "Heroes" (NBC, 9 p.m.), in which Nathan tries to keep Sylar from getting at the president and there is talk of some sacrifice as the third season ends.

A show that may not live to see a third season is "Chuck" (NBC, 8 p.m.) whose fans are already campaigning for a return. Having Chevy Chase guest on the finale Monday can't be a good omen, though. Also guest starring in the episode are Morgan Fairchild, Tony Hale, Scott Bakula and Bruce Boxleitner.

Part of its problem is its scheduling opposite Josh Schwartz' other show, "Gossip Girl" (The CW, 8 p.m.), which is back with a new episode and the return of Georgina.

Surprised nobody asks for any coffee, even though it's 3 a.m. on "24" (Fox, 9 p.m.). I guess the action keeps them awake, and Jon Voight is still in play.

The number of candidates are shrinking on "Dancing with the Stars" (ABC, 8 p.m.) after the ouster of Lawrence Taylor, the earliest departure of an NFL on the show yet.

Named Sunday as a future classic on the TV Land Awards was "Two and a Half Men" (CBS, 9 p.m.).

Scripted dramas like to take a whack at reality shows that are edging them out of primetime. Tonight, on a new "CSI: Miami" (CBS, 10 p.m.), a bachelorette from a reality show is murdered. I'm sure it's a coincidence the show used to play opposite "The Bachelorette."

Primetime

It’s time for Ellie and Awesome to tie the knot in the season finale of Chuck (NBC, 7pm), but it looks to be one crazy wedding. Morgan Fairchild and Bruce Boxleitner return as Awesome’s parents. Scott Bakula is on-hand as Ellie & Chuck’s Dad. Chevy Chase and Tony Hale continue their stints on the show as well. I kinda love this show and really hope we get another season of it. If you like the show, be sure to visit the official website and say so somehow (at the very least, click on lots of Chuck content there).

House (FOX, 7pm) and his team take on the case of a deaf teenager. Plus House isn’t sleeping and may be seeing things (and dead people).

Michelle Trachtenberg returns to the Upper East Side as “Georgina” on Gossip Girl (CW, 7pm). Oh-oh. Things are a bit strange between Chuck and Nate due to their mutual interest in Blair, of course. And Serena’s relationship gets even more complicated.

Sheldon plans the weekend of his dreams while the rest of the guys are to be in Las Vegas, but things go awry (of course) on The Big Bang Theory (CBS, 7pm). Jodi Lyn O’Keefe guest stars.

New episodes of Property Virgins and Dear Genevieve

Ted breaks the “three days rule” so Barney and Marshall play a trick on him by pretending to be the woman he’s texting on How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 7:30pm). Rebecca Budig guest stars.

Everybody tries to stop Sylar from getting to the President in the season finale of Heroes (NBC, 8pm - 9:01pm). Well, maybe not everybody, but it is the focus of the finale. I’ve seen this episode and while there are some interesting developments, there were also some bits of the finale that were incredibly stupid or poorly done. (In other words: it’s a lot like most episodes of the show.) Is it a satisfying end to a very uneven season of the show? Not really, but like I said, there are some interesting developments (or at least things that could prove interesting next season). I’ve always wanted to like this show more than I actually do. Don’t get your hopes up, but if you’ve watched the show thus far, you pretty much know what you’re in for. DVR/VCR Alert: Episode runs from 8pm ’til 9:01pm.

Chelsea sets Alan up on a blind date with her new friend on Two and a Half Men (CBS, 8pm). The thing is, her new friend is named “Rose” . . . (Yes, Melanie Lynskey returns as Rose.)

Elisha Cuthbert is back on 24 (FOX, 8pm) as “Kim Bauer” and I mention that in case that’s news to anyone that cares. Otherwise, the current day/season continues. The press release tells me that “Jack Bauer takes center stage” which doesn’t sound like news to me.

Two and A Half Men

If you want to see a sitcom presentation of master morality versus slave morality, this show--Two and a half men does a pretty good job portraying them.

Charlie, the older brother, represents master morality. He's self-centered, self-confident, hedonistic (living for the moment and successfully enjoying the sensory pleasures of life: wealth, women, alcohol, drugs, etc.), and artistic (he's a song-writer). He has a relaxed demeanor and his humor is triumphant (coming from a top-down position). Life comes easy for him.

Alan, the younger brother, represents slave morality. He's self-denying, insecure, struggling to make life "work" for him (he has difficulty attracting money and women, and he's very health conscious), and healing/maintenance oriented (he's a chiropractor). He has a nervous demeanor and his humor is vengeful (coming from a bottom-out position). He sees life as a chore.

Whereas Alan often obsesses to the point of neuroticism over the "moral implications" of his actions, Charlie has a more devil-may-care attitude. Charlie will hurt others for his own benefit or amusement, but he does so in an almost innocent, child-like manner. He doesn't hurt others (or take pleasure in their pain) because he hates them, but because he loves himself. Alan, on the other hand, can be very vengeful. He will hurt his brother (or at least take pleasure in his brother's misfortune) while feeling morally justified—seeing it as a sort of punishment and getting-even for the fact that his brother enjoys life so easily while he works so hard and suffers.

Alan's biggest issue with his brother is that Charlie doesn't acknowledge his contribution to the household. Charlie's biggest issue with his brother is that Alan mooches off of his success. They both love each other, but Charlie fluctuates between seeing Alan as a nuisance and pitying him, while Alan views Charlie with a mixture of jealousy/resentment and admiration.

The lesson Charlie seeks to learn is one of how to love other people and gain stability in his life. The lesson Alan seeks to learn is how to love himself and gain prosperity.

Networks Prepare Fall Schedule

It seems that every aspect of society today has hit a depression, and television is no different. According to tvsquad.com, major TV networks are planning to release their fall schedule next month, and several popular shows appear to be on the fence or even worse, cancelled.

For ABC, most would guess that immensely popular shows Lost, Desperate Housewives, and Grey’s Anatomy are all going to be around next fall. But Christina Applegate’s Samantha Who? is on the fence, or as the industry would say, “on the bubble,” aptly named for an NBC exec in the '50s.

For NBC, it seems that crowd favorites 30 Rock, The Office, and Heroes will be back, but shows like Chuck and My Name Is Earl might not be making a come back.

The Mentalist, Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set, and all CSI’s are likely to continue on CBS’s lineup, while long-running Cold Case and Without a Trace seem to be on the chopping block. Other shows that may be cancelled or on the bubble include Fox’s Dollhouse, and the CW’s Privileged.

Is YouTube the Next Hulu?

Since it was first unveiled on the Internet, YouTube has become the most popular video-sharing web site, with a claim to fame of creating celebrities out of even the most obscure person.

CBS' "Two and a Half Men" will soon be offered for free on the YouTube site.
Recently, however, YouTube has announced that it is going to be providing movies and television shows on their site, which leaves on to question whether or not YouTube has forgotten the point of creating their site in the first place. It seems as though YouTube is now more concentrated on competing with rival video-sharing sites, such as Hulu, than being a haven for independent producers to make their work public.

Now, I will be the first to say that, over the years, YouTube has had its fair share of trouble with the major studios. Several production firms have laid copyright claims against the site, claiming that the site was assisting users in distributing copyrighted material, such as episodes of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and clips of Fox’s “Family Guy”. This forced YouTube to begin pulling videos from the site, and even running advertisements for the show in question. These advertisements, much like on television, cannot be skipped.

One of the many banners ads to be shown on YouTube in recent months.
As of right now, YouTube has managed to make deals with numerous studios, including Sony, CBS, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Lions Gate Entertainment, Liberty Media, and the Walt Disney Company.

Could YouTube be making these deals only to stifle the complaints of the movie studios, or to become a more prominent money maker for the Google corporation?

Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

He who lends his name name to the category is the ultimate in destined star-crossed crazy first love. He's a vampire, she's the slayer, doomed. He's celebrated a bicentennial she's in high school, but he's got a soul and he's so broody she can't help but fall. For the first three seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy and Angel were the it couple on television, they seemed epic. There was death, drama, bloodshed, and passion...its was everything epic love should be, but then towards the latter half of season three we began to see what Giles and Joyce saw they were totally wrong for each other. Well for starters there was the no sex thingy. See Angel had a soul thanks to a gypsy curse, and the whole curse rule is if he was one moment of true happiness he shall lose it...well someone should've warned Buffy 1-7 dvd box setbecause after she gives him her virginity the happiness of their boink takes away the carebear aspect of his "carebear with fangs" persona. He turns back into the uber-evil Angelus and goes on a killing and tormenting spree. Eventually Buffy 1-7 dvd box set must kill him in order to save the world, but not before Willow successfully manages to reinstate his soul but the stage was set and Buffy kisses him takes a sword to him and sends him to hell...of course he comes back. He comes back in season 3 and though they get back together its never quite the same you don't feel so in it, and Angel more and more notices that Buffy 1-7 dvd box set is growing up and he must let her go. So he moves to LA without saying goodbye leaving her heartbroken, she moves on to stable niceguy Riley and eventually to the one that I think is really for her, Spike, but even in the finale as Angel returns they still question if they're meant to be.

Joss Whedon Hates Happiness

Joss Whedon is by far one of the greatest television writers of all time. The genius behind the acclaimed Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as well as the movie Serenity and the brand new series on Fox called Dollhouse. Which is starting to kick serious ass as the season progresses.

Whedon has this incredible ability to create characters that viewers actually care about. I can hardly think of a character on his show that I didn’t like, or at least respect the creepiness of. This being said, Joss Whedon also has a tendency to put his characters through the emotional wringer, and death is more often than not a very large part of the story ending.

Spoilers for all of his various shows/movies/etc below.

After watching the most recent episode of Dollhouse, I arrived at the conclusion that as much as JW enjoys bringing joy to the hearts of millions of fanboys and girls across the world, he also very much enjoys watching as our hearts are ripped out and stomped on. Episode 8 seemed to end with a happy note. The guy got the girl, Echo saved the day, and we learned more about Mellie/November’s past. A little bittersweet, but not bad. But episode 9, A Spy in the House of Love? Heartbreak! Paul Ballard finds out his new cute girlfriend is actually a doll, we learn who the spy in the Dollhouse is (and that definitely doesn’t end happily) and poor DeWitt had to end her little affair with Victor. Which, whoah, I definitely didn’t see coming. But it only sustains the point that no one can be happy while living in JW’s world!

Take Firefly/Serenity. The series itself was relatively light. Sure, Mal gets to kick some ass once in a while, and the reavers are freaking scary, but it wasn’t too bad. Then Serenity came along. Mal’s character was so much darker in the movie than in the series! Sheppard Book dies, which to be honest I was sad about but not too heartbroken. But then Wash! Really? Did they NEED to kill off Wash? He was the light! The awesome! The guy who played with plastic dinosaurs! And JW stuck a giant wooden pole through his chest, effectively breaking the hearts of millions of fans.

Even the cheesy, Sarah Michell Gellar-filled wonder that was Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended with the entire town of Sunnydale turning into a crater, and Buffy’s sexy British vamp boyfriend exploding. (He comes back in Angel, which is about the only thing that redeemed the later seasons of that show. But still. Exploded.) Buffy wasn’t even originally going to end that way! It was going to end the way season five ended, with Buffy dying in order to save her sister (and the world) from certain destruction. He was going to kill the main character!

And dare I start on Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog? All poor Billy wanted to do was rule the world with the woman he loved. Then JW went and killed her. You could trace Whedon’s career with a trail of bodies!

I will forever be in love with the stories that he weaves and the characters he creates. But as an avid fan of happy endings, I very much wish he would let people be happy - let characters live. Please?

Buffy Movie: Not in the foreseeable future

Scifiwire.com was host to a pretty heated discussion over the past couple of days with regards to the rumor that a Buffy movie might be in the works. Wait, haven’t I heard that somewhere before?

As far as I can tell, this round of rumors originated when Showbizspy.com reported that SMG was in talks to reprise her role as Buffy in a movie, perhaps as a mother. According to Scifiwire, Joss Whedon responded, “Not gonna happen.”

The responses to the Scifiwire post were immediate and passionate. Some responders told us to ‘read between the lines’ of Whedon’s comments. Others are sick of the rumors all together. Still others comment that there is too much bad blood between SMG and the other Buffy team members to put a project like that together.

In my heart, I have been waiting for a Buffy movie since 2003. However, my head keeps reading updates about busy Joss has been. In his most recent appearances he discussed how difficult it was to finish the commentary for Dr. Horrible because of his work on Dollhouse. The guy is busy. Also, he’s been pretty forthcoming with the public in the past about his upcoming projects.

So, naive as it may be, I’m going to … wait for it … believe him!

“I appreciate your thoughts on the matter. In fact, I encourage you to always challenge me when you feel it’s appropriate. You should never be cowed be authority. Except, of course, in this instance when I am clearly right and you are clearly wrong.” - Giles

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: 6.1: "Bargaining: Part 1"

I very much liked this opener because it addresses a lot of the issues within the Scooby group that are going to be staples for the season. Most importantly is Willow’s magic addiction. A lot of people hate this whole story but actually it’s the most fascinating thing for me in the season just because I love Willow so much so it’s sort of fun as a viewer to see your opinions about her change and to see how they pull of her descent into the dark side. We get to see what life is like without Buffy and that it has been 5 months. They use the BuffyBot which was great and really creepy and disturbing that someone that acts like Buffy is still in their presence. Her interaction with everyone is interesting so it was a nice element. I enjoy that Spike kept his promise to protect Dawn.
I had a lot of favorite parts; one was the scene in which Willow kills the fawn because it was so unexpected. The other one was Giles at the airport and everyone rushing there to say goodbye to him. It was so touching and will surely be one of my favorite scenes in the series. The Buffy resurrection scene was really messed up as I did not expect it to go that far with the pain that Willow went through. Her determination for this to work and confidence was quite off putting. I really liked the time that they put into addressing the groups reservations about the spell particularly Xander. We learn that Xander and Anya have not told anyone about their engagement which is not surprising. The unfortunate thing about this plotline is that they set it up too early; even if I did not know how this would all end, you can see where they are going with it. Also at the end of the episode it was really really disturbing to see a 5 month decaying version of Buffy. I am glad they added that touch.

'Mother' tends to Fox sibling

Twentieth Century Fox's TV and film studios are already playing nice under the new News Corp. regime -- but their first collaboration came by accident.

Viewers of this week's episode of "How I Met Your Mother" -- produced by 20th Century Fox TV -- probably noticed several references to its sister feature division's upcoming release "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

Posters for the movie could be seen in the background as the show's stars strolled down a New York street. And one scene featured characters wrestling each other with Wolverine-style claws.

Is it a sign of the times under Fox Filmed Entertainment co-chairs Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman, now that they oversee both TV and film divisions?

Well, yes and no.

Yes, the two sides are more closely aligned under the post-Peter Chernin setup. But the "Mother" integration was already in the works prior to last month's executive shuffle -- and actually wasn't intended to include "Mother" originally.

Insiders said CBS had originally sealed an integration deal with the 20th Century Fox film studio to include "Wolverine" in an episode of "The Big Bang Theory."

"Big Bang," after all, revolves around the exact kind of characters who would be first in line to see an "X-Men" movie. But according to one source, "Big Bang" exec producer Chuck Lorre passed on incorporating "Wolverine" into the show.

Lorre holds a bit of sway -- after all, he's behind the Eye's top-rated comedy, "Two and a Half Men."

So CBS turned to "Mother" and asked the sitcom to include a few "Wolverine" references. Being good corporate citizens, 20th Century Fox TV obliged.

In the end, CBS and Fox Filmed Entertainment got its integration, Lorre got to do his show without any ad interference and 20th Century Fox TV scored a few points in its new setup.

Two and a half men

Even a viewer disinclined to hyperbole or largess would be forced to acknowledge that “Arrested Development” spun hope for the future of television comedy, that it consistently remained, in its three seasons, about 610 times better than “Two and a Half Men,” the most-watched comedy on television, one long, dumb sex joke that charges along, now in its sixth year and destined to be with us for at least three more.

In addition to Mr. Hurwitz the two other chief writers on “Sit Down, Shut Up” are alumni of “Two and a Half Men,” and I question the marriage of sensibilities as I’d question a hookup between a mid-’80s Christopher Guest and a late-career Joan Rivers. You’re curious about the love child, but you don’t necessarily want to adopt him. “Sit Down, Shut Up” uses animated characters against live-action back drops and it feels like the spawn of ambitious satire and cheap tricks, the full spectrum of its genetics all too present.

Liz Vassey Biography

As a biography, Liz Vassey was born on August 9, 1972 in Raleigh, North Carolina, so her age is 36. Her weight is unknown but she stands 5′9″. She grew up in Tampa, Florida. She started acting at 9 years of age, and did quite a bit of theater work, appearing in over 50 plays in the greater Tampa Bay area. When Vassey was just 13 years old, she had the honor of being invited to attend theater classes at the University of South Florida. She then went on to take classes at Manhattan Class Company, Howard Fine Studios and University of Southern California.

Vassey got her big break when she appeared on the ABC soap All My Children as Emily Ann Sago. She played the role from 1988 to 1991 and during that time she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in recognition of her performance. As an avid AMC fan, I remember her well. She later would star as Captain Liberty on The Tick, and has had roles on Grapevine, ER, Brotherly Love, Maximum Bob, Push, Nevada, Man of the House, Two and a Half Men and The Last Thing You Want to Do is Wind Up with a Hump. She most recently has a recurring role on CSI, playing Wendy Simms.

This beautiful brunette had the distinction of being ranked #74 in the 2002 edition of Stuff magazine’s “102 Sexiest Women In The World”.

Vassey notes her hobbies as scuba diving, running and writing. Here is an article she wrote for Esquire Magazine.

Vassey’s husband is David Emmerichs, a Hollywood camera operator, whom she married on May 2, 2004.

BUFFY MEETS DRACULA'S DAUGHTER!!!

Yes, I have started watching the second season of Buffy! The one in which she meets Dracula's Daughter!

(She doesn't meet Dracula until the 5th Season).

This always annoys Buffy fans who scream "She NEVER meets Dracula's DAUGHTER!"

"That's DRUSILLA!" they scream. "Spike's Girlfriend! She isn't Dracula's Daughter!"

Oh, yes, she is. That is Juliet Landau...the daughter of Martin Landau and Barbara Bain
And Martin, you'll remember, got his Oscar for playing Bela Lugosi in the movie ED WOOD (also starring Johnny Depp...mrowr) and Bela Lugosi IS DRACULA!!!
So THERE! Buffy Fans!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Long Way Home

I’m a huge Buffy fan but I prefer seasons 1 through 3 instead of the subsequent seasons. I find this a bit puzzling because I tend to like books and movies with adult protagonists more than teenagers. And yet the case of Buffy is clearly very young during the seasons 1-3. Then again, I’m of the opinion that the first three season are hold together far better plotwise and thematically than the later ones. (I especially disliked witchcraft as symbol for two different things which aren’t related to each other.) Still, there are episodes in the later seasons which I just love.

Anyway, I was thrilled to hear that Buffy would continue in comic book form. Was a bit less thrilled when I realized that I had to wait for them to come out in trade paperback form. I did manage to get in English before but now it has been published in Finnish, too! I was a bit worried about the translation since even the quality of the subtitles, er, varied a lot. This translator seems to know something about the Buffyverse although, alas, not quite enough. (For example, “Bored now” was translated into “Are you still bored”…)

The story starts a couple of years after the end of the TV-series and the world has changed. There are many Slayers now and Buffy and the gang are trying to mold them into a fighting force against the (supernatural) evils in the world. Buffy and Xander are in Scotland leading and teaching a strike team of Slayers while Andrew is in Italy and Giles is in some Islamic country. Willow is doing her own thing with Kennedy.

Buffy and a strike team take out a nest of demons. There they find out that the demons’ victim has a strange marking on his chest. Meanwhile, General Voll and his men are watching the Slayers. The General is convinced that Buffy and the Slayers are a threat to society or at the very least to the General’s own plans. His people have been investigating the remains of Sunnydale and have found two survivors there. One of them is Amy who really wants to kill Buffy.

Meanwhile in Scotland Dawn has grown into a giant. She refuses to tell how (or doesn’t know) and only wants to talk to Willow. Rumor has it that she dated a triple witch and he transformed her. Xander is leading the operations center while Buffy goes out as the leader of the strike team. Soon, Amy attacks. She puts Buffy under a sleeping spell and has an army of undead attacking the Scottish castle where the team is staying.

It’s nice to see that much of the charm of the Buffy –series is still here: humor, pop culture references, witty dialogue, plot twists. The basic situation is, of course, rather different; instead of a small group of (teenaged) friends who try to save the world and keep the police in the dark, the Slayers are a big group with all sorts of technology and apparently even a team of witches working for them. Still, many of the new characters remain faces in the crowd and the focus is on the old gang. There are also lots of references to characters and the events in the series. Even Ethan Rayne makes a guest appearance.

The last story is about a Buffy look alike who gets a very dangerous assignment.

If you’ve never watched Buffy, I would definitely recommend starting with the TV-show and not with this comic.

Art: Art gets just a 'meh' from me. I didn’t hate it which is always a positive sign but I didn’t love it either. The characters don’t really look like the actors although getting that right would have been very difficult anyway. I really liked the covers, though.

Overall: There is enough of a mix of old and new to make me a happy old Buffy fan!

Joss Whedon Kills ‘Buffy’ Movie Rumors

Here at The Flickcast we love all-things Whedon. From Angel to Firefly to Serenity, Dollhouse and the show that started it all Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, the Whedon’s work has made us laugh, scared us and entertained us for many years. When Buffy went off the air in 2003, rumors and speculation about an eventual big-screen adaptation began almost immediately.

Even though the show ended with a vary satisfying, albeit slightly sad, episode, fans have always wanted to see what happens next. Not even a comic book version from Dark Horse that continues the series with Season Eight has been able to make fans completely forget their desire for a big-screen Buffy. They just haven’t stopped wishing for it to happen. Sadly, according to the man himself in an interview this week, and posted over at Sci-Fi Wire, wishing just won’t make it so.

According to Joss:

“Not gonna happen. Until I gather the press and make a public announcement myself that it’s going to happen, never believe anything.”

At least we still have the comic. And who knows, one day Joss just might gather those reporters and make that annuncement. Stranger things have happened in Hollywood.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Is Pregnant

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are expecting their first child together, People reports.

"They're very excited," a source tells the magazine. Gellar, who turns 32 on Tuesday, is reportedly due in the fall.

The former Buffy star, who is slated to shoot the HBO pilot The Wonderful Maladays, has been married to Prinze, 33, since 2002. This will be the third Buffy offspring this year: Gellar's former small-screen sidekick Alyson Hannigan gave birth to a daughter last month, while David Boreanaz is expecting his second child in the fall.

This American Life—Live!

From radio, to TV, to Podcast, to stage, to big screen—there’s no medium the bespectacled radio wonk Ira Glass can’t master. Tonight, he returns to NYU’s Skirball Center for This American Life—Live! with a hipster/geek/critically acclaimed bunch of popular TAL contributors for a live taping to be broadcast in HD to more than 400 national movie theaters. Past themes of the quirky radio-turned-TV series, which revels in the oddities of everyday life, range from “Scenes From a Mall” to “Life After Death.” Tonight’s theme is “Return to the Scene of the Crime,” featuring storytelling by sex columnist Dan Savage, public radio producer and writer Starlee Kine, and comedian Mike Birbiglia; a “special investigation” by journalist David Rakoff and comic Dave Hill; a new cartoon by Chris Ware; and an appearance by special guest Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Joss Whedon Kills Rumors Of A New ‘Buffy’ Movie

Earlier this month we heard the AMAZING rumor that Sarah Michelle Gellar was reportedly FINALLY ready to take on a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie … but about a week later, we learned the even more amazing news that SMG is pregs at last with her first child (meaning that reports that she was ready to do a BtVS movie were prolly greatly exaggerated). Today, tho, Buffy creator Joss Whedon drives the final stake into the heart of this Buffy movie rumor by categorically denying that any BtVS movie is in the works.

Here’s the final word on that rumored Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie from the creator himself, Joss Whedon. “Not gonna happen,” Whedon told reporters in Hollywood on Wednesday. “Not gonna happen. Until I gather the press and make a public announcement myself that it’s going to happen, never believe anything.” So there you have it!

While this news is a TOTAL bummer, I guess it’s really not that much of a surprise. This Buffy movie rumor rears its head every once-in-a-while and hopeful fans (like me) hope against hope that the rumor is true at last. But, alas, we are left dejected and crestfallen once again. I suppose we should keep this in mind the next time a rumor like this goes around but something tells me that hope and belief will win out in the end … and we (well, I) may fall for it again. So that’s it … no Buffy movie either with or without SMG is in the works. Since Joss has his hands full with the fate of Dollhouse these days, I doubt we’ll be hearing any future Buffy news anytime soon.

Joss Whedon---Buffy The Vampire Slayer

When asked about where the concept of Buffy the Vampire Slayer came from, Joss Whedon explains that it came from being a fan of horror films. In the process of watching them, he grew to feel sorry for the teenage girl who was always being chased and/or killed by some kind of monster and wanted to create a world where she could fight back. Coming into television, Joss quickly learned that the industry standard was essentially radio with pictures. Not content to simply ignore cinematic influences, Joss Whedon created a series that could never be described as radio with pictures. In fact, the final episode of Buffy's first season features his directorial debut. It stands out as the most cinematic of that first season. Consider the opening sequence where a slow motion battle between Buffy Summers and a vampire highlights the essential premise of Buffy The Vampire Slayer using nothing but visuals. Joss would return several more times throughout the course of the series to direct some of the most memorable episodes including the epic season 2 finale "Becoming," the 'silent episode' "Hush" which is about the nature of communication, and the surprisingly well done musical episode "Once More With Feeling." I don't want to spend too much time naming every Joss Whedon directed episode, but I can say that everytime I see an episode that let's me know that it's "Written and Directed by Joss Whedon," I'm attached to my television set by metaphorical industrial strength glue. Not every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will feel like a cinematic masterpiece. Just like Whedon's other shows, it is tied down by time constraints which do force you to make very standardized shots more often than not.

BUFFNESS

I have been watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer again (not the movie, the series) and I began with Season One (I have two episodes left before going on to season 2) and it reminded me of the amusing "Buffy in less than a Minute" video that was kicking around the internet a few years back.I love Buffy very much

The New Dynamic Duo

I have to say, it is rather weird that, in so close a time period, we had two comic books involving tentacled creatures that ate a certain kind of person (children or Slayers) and was willingly given said people by the local townsfolk. The newest issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight features the team of Giles and Faith traveling through Europe. They bump into a young Slayer named Courtney who has run off from Buffy’s crew and wants to make it on her own. Then, they hear about a sanctuary for Slayers in the middle of what Faith calls a Dracula flick. Add to that some deception, a tentacled monster (as mentioned before), and some vampires, and you’ve got your newest Faith story.

I’ve always liked Faith and her bad-assiness, and I love how morally grey she is in the current story. And I find her partnership with Giles intriguing and refreshing. So this issue is automatically a winning combination. We also get to see Faith get a bit more humanized with the scene from when she first became a Slayer. She failed to kill one vampire, and the thought of that failure has haunted her to this day. Faith has always seemed like some untouchable person, and I like my characters round, so this is a superb addition to the history of an already great character. Jim Krueger may not be an established Buffy writer, but he gets the characters. Understandable, considering his experience. Cliff Richards may not be Georges Jeanty, but he’s pretty dang close. I didn’t realize until about halfway into the comic that Jeanty wasn’t the artist. Buffy continues to go strong with its current direction, and each issue makes me more excited for what is to come. This one is no different.

Gadget Girl Hits the Road – What tech toys should I bring?

If I were a superhero, I’d probably be Gadget Girl or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but Buffy’s already taken, so Gadget Girl it is. I love technology gadgets, but the sad fact is that I don’t have enough money to buy every cool new shiny toy that I want, so I have to pick and choose and invest my dollars carefully. So when we started planning the Get On The Bus trip, I started planning which gadgets I’d need to ensure I have a great trip, can work, can play and can keep myself sane while traveling with my coworkers and even some of you! Here’s my list so far:

Windows Mobile phone – Can be used for email, maps, directions, documents, taking pictures and even playing a couple of games.
Flip Camera – I’ll need this to interview people along the route.
Unnamed Music Device – It was a present from my husband and kids for Mother’s Day a couple of years ago. Yes, I want and need to upgrade to a Zune, but as I stated earlier, I’ve limited funds to invest in tech toys. (and I’m not just saying the Zune bit because I work for Microsoft – I want my FM radio!)
Electronic Sudoku puzzle – I’m kind of a puzzle freak.
Kindle – Confession: I have an almost pathological fear of running out of reading material on long flights – multiply this by the number of days I’ll be on the bus and I’m nearly paralyzed with anxiety! So, I woke up early Sunday morning with an epiphany – I need a Kindle. Never mind that I’ve wanted one for a while, this is the perfect excuse to purchase it and it saves the husband and kids from having to shop around for a Mother’s Day present. My Kindle hasn’t been delivered yet, but I think this might be the perfect therapy for my own particular psychosis.
What else? What would you bring with you on the bus if you were in my shoes?

Lovecraft television series?

Normally, if you were to tell me that they were making an H.P. Lovecraft series based on every single one of his works.... I would probably and most literally die of Joy Overload.

So don't go screwing up the force of the blow by telling me that it will be a "re-imagining" (the pun is bad, too) or the Buffy of sci-fi and horror. First off, Buffy was the Buffy of horror, and as much as I love Buffy.... Joss Whedon's Necronomicon is not something that I would like to see. I do not mean to be a purist, but Whedon's writing is a bit too... fluffy and optimistic... for Lovecraft. Maybe if I saw a mature improvement from Firefly to Dollhouse, I'd feel better about the comparison to Buffy, but since Dollhouse was degenerative writing... no.

Even so, I'd like to see what this looks like. I'm not entirely a cad.

Angel

What is it ? A spin-off from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel saw the eponymous vampire-with-a-soul (David Boreanaz) travel to LA to set up an agency to "help the helpless". Over the course of five seasons, he morphed into the head of a demonic law film (aren’t they all ?) and we last saw him standing with his few remaining allies as the entire city was invaded by hell-beasts. And a dragon.

Why would it work as a film ? The ultra-bleak cliffhanger ending was a reflection of how betrayed and abandoned the show’s team felt at their abrupt cancellation (just as ratings were on the rise too), and it’d kinda be nice to see how they got out of it. OK, so there was a follow-up comic, but that wasn’t so great (SPOILER : they end up going through a big adventure to undo everything that just happened) and we’d like a better story please. But we’d like to keep the dragon, k thx.

Angel vs. Edward? Or maybe Jacob? Who do you Root For?

Let’s play a game. If you had to bet on who’d take who in an epic vampire showdown – would you wager on Angel or Edward? This one is so easy, people, and I know who I’d pick. But I’m not going to show my hand right away. I want to know what you think. Weigh in with a comment and then I’ll come back tomorrow and tell you who I’m rooting for.

Why do I ask, you wonder? Because “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” actress Michelle Trachtenberg opined on this very topic on MTV.com, saying it would be a battle to the “pointy teeth” between these two fictional vampires.

Anyway, Angel was the brooding, sexy, badass vampire with a soul in the Buffy series, and Edward is the glittery, controlling, annoying, petulant, whiny – oh sorry, I guess I just admitted who I want to win – in the “Twilight” books…

A baby for Buffy

Former Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz are both expecting children. Gellar is pregnant with her first child with husband Freddie Prinze, Jr., while Boreanaz is looking forward to baby No. 2 with wife Jamie Bergman, reports MTV News.

For all you Twilight lovers who are too young to remember, Gellar and Boreanaz portrayed the original star-crossed human/vampire couple on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy was chosen by fate to fight and destroy vampires, but she fell in love with Angel, a centuries-old vampire with a soul, cursed by gypsies who declared that if Angel should find even one moment of perfect happiness, he would once again turn evil.

Since Buffy, both actors have moved on to other projects: 39-year-old Boreanaz is now on the quirky Fox procedural Bones, while 31-year-old Gellar's has tried her hand at a film career (her last two endeavors, Suburban Girl and Possession went straight to DVD) and is set to star in a new pilot for HBO titled The Wonderful Maladys.
