Chris Fisher Talks S. Darko

Director Chris Fisher wants to set the record straight on a few issues surrounding his latest project, S. Darko, which had the internet buzzing with malice ever since the word got out that there was going to a be companion film to Richard Kelly’s cult classic Donnie Darko.

“So many people think we made this film in secret, that we weren’t fans of Kelly’s film, or that this is a purely money-driven project,” said Fisher. “None of those things are true at all. We just wanted to create another movie based on the ‘Darko’ cosmology, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for Kelly’s vision.”

S. Darko centers around Samantha, Donnie’s sister, and the aftermath she faces amidst the tragedy in her life and a series of bizarre visions that begin to haunt her. Suddenly she’s thrown into parallel existences true to the nature of the ‘Darko’ themes and seeks out the meaning within the people in her life and herself.

Fisher explains, “S. Darko is a sci-fi fairy tale that examines the idea of a lead character that’s an archetypal princess, but here we have two versions with Samantha: a ‘bright’ princess and this darker, sort of punk princess. Ultimately, I wanted to make a kick-ass female-driven post-modern project.”

“I hope that S. Darko feels a lot like 'Buffy 1-7 dvd' in the sense that here we have this girl who has to learn how to fight through the pain in her world. For a lot of the movie, Sam follows this alpha-type friend who makes most of her decisions for her. At one point, her character turns a corner where she ultimately has to decide to go down her own path. I just wanted to create a film that has a positive message but isn’t too heavy-handed,” Fischer added.

There have been a lot of murmurs that S. Darko is meant to be a sequel to Donnie Darko or that Fisher was looking to tinker with the original film. According to Fisher, those ideas couldn’t be further from the project he directed.

“We didn’t set out to explain anything that was set up in the ‘Donnie’ film or answer any of those questions,” said Fisher. “My story is all about Sam, not Donnie, and the only thing we tried to do here that is similar to Kelly’s film is just keep that anti-establishment spirit alive and explore the original’s themes with theories about tangent universes and how cause and effect can shape our world.”

“S. Darko is not a sequel or a prequel necessarily. It should stand alone as a companion piece that exists within the ‘Darko’ universe. We embraced Kelly’s ideas but explored them further with a different point of view. If we wanted to do a sequel or whatever, we’d have created a completely different story.”

Fisher obviously knew that with S. Darko he’d be treading into rough territory since Kelly’s film is considered sacred amongst the cult film purists.

Fisher said, “I knew that there definitely would be some people who would be resistant to my film, but I think what bothered me so much was that people were judging before they even saw it.”

“The bottom line is that with S. Darko I wanted to leave my mark, and I think the movie should just speak for itself,” Fisher added. “I can appreciate if someone doesn’t like my film, but you should actually see it before you say anything negative.”

Girl who knifed Nina was into drugs, vampires

A young woman convicted in the golf course sex-slaying of 13-year-old Nina Courtepatte got into drugs, prostitution and a vampire cult after being badly abused as a child.

That's what emerged in court yesterday at a youth court sentencing for the 20-year-old, nicknamed Buffy 1-7 dvd.

According to a pre-sentence report and psychiatric assessment prepared on the city woman, who cannot be identified because she was 16 at the time of Courtepatte's April 3, 2005, killing, Buffy 1-7 dvd grew up in a broken home.

"(She) is the product of severe neglect, as well as physical, sexual and emotional abuse," says the pre-sentence report, documenting reports of her being denied food, beaten and made to lick urine off of a carpet.

It is also alleged that she was sexually abused by one of her mother's boyfriends when she was about two.

According to the reports, at about age 15 she was using crack cocaine and crystal methamphetamine and ended up leaving school and living on the street, where she sometimes sold herself for food, shelter, drugs and books.

She also became involved "with vampire culture," say the reports, reporting her stating she had at one point "sharpened her teeth with a file" in order to "bite herself."

In the psychiatric assessment, Buffy 1-7 dvd explained she had been involved in "group activities of biting each other, collecting blood in a cup and then drinking it" and said she would like to continue with her interest in vampires.

Regarding her part in the slaying, the woman claims she felt if she didn't participate, she "would be next."

According to the psychiatric assessment, the woman suffers from an antisocial personality disorder, a borderline personality disorder and polysubstance abuse. She also poses a moderate to high risk of future violent recidivism.

The weeklong sentencing hearing is to decide whether the woman will be sentenced as a youth or as an adult.

She was found guilty in July of being a party to second-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault.

Court has heard Courtepatte was raped twice and viciously beaten to death with a wrench and a sledgehammer after being targeted as the "chosen one" and lured from West Edmonton Mall to a golf course west of the city.

A judge ruled Buffy 1-7 dvd had put her foot on Courtepatte's stomach to hold her down and held her hand and offered comforting words so she wouldn't scream. After the rape and deadly assault, Buffy 1-7 dvd stabbed at Courtepatte's throat with a throwing knife she had with her.

Three others were convicted in the slaying and one man was acquitted, however his case and one other is currently before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Buffy should get adult sentence: Crown

A maximum of seven years under youth sentencing is not nearly enough to rehabilitate a teenage girl or hold her accountable for her part in the murder of Nina Courtepatte, a Crown prosecutor told court Thursday.

Prosecutor John Watson argued that Buffy 1-7 dvd, the nickname of a girl who was 16 at the time of her crimes, should be sentenced as an adult for her role in the violent rape and murder of 13-year-old Nina.

Though she is now 20, her identity is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

She was convicted in July 2008 of second-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault after a judge found she stabbed Nina's neck and helped hold her down while she was raped by two others in the middle of a golf course in 2004.

Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, Buffy 1-7 dvd would receive a maximum of seven years if sentenced as a youth.

“Is a youth sentence long enough to hold (her) accountable for her actions?” Watson asked the court. “Can she be treated or rehabilitated with the maximum of the Youth Criminal Justice Act? If not, then an adult sentence must be imposed.”

Court has already heard of the lifetime of abuse, neglect and homelessness that have dominated Buffy’s life, but Watson argued that does not disqualify her from making her own right choices.

“There is no form of even remote justification for this crime,” Watson said. “I submit this was a murder for the thrill of it. No other explanation comes to mind.”

During the arguments, Buffy 1-7 dvd slowly rocked back and forth but otherwise showed no reaction.

Buffy is the last of the five accused to reach trial in relation to Courtepatte’s death.

Defence lawyer Peter Royal argued that the teen should be sentenced as a youth because she did not directly contribute to Nina’s death or coerce her from West Edmonton Mall to the golf course.

The one stab wound Buffy 1-7 dvd box set did inflict was deep, but not life-threatening, Royal said.

Buffy has now been in custody at the Calgary Young Offender Centre for four years, roughly a fifth of her life.

During that time, Royal stated, the girl is “viewed as a model prisoner.” In custody, she has completed three-quarters of the classes required for a high school diploma and acts as an ambassador for visitors to the school program.

Royal argued that his client is less blameworthy than the other attackers that night who raped Courtepatte and bludgeoned her with a sledgehammer.

“Her involvement in this crime was lesser,” he said. “A youth sentence would be entirely appropriate.”

In previous testimony, forensic psychiatrist Vinesh Gupta classified Buffy 1-7 dvd box set as a moderate-to-high risk to reoffend. The teen is far more likely to see herself as a victim than show remorse for her actions, he said.

Jon Cryer of Two and a Half Men

Something no one seems to have considered in the early days of Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd is its endurance. The CBS sitcom wraps its sixth season Monday, and it’s still a top 10 hit. If it goes much longer, star Jon Cryer says, Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd might need a new title. After all, Angus T. Jones, who plays Cryer’s son (the "half" man, if you will), is 16 and growing fast. "He won’t be a kid much longer," Cryer says. "Alas, the title Three Men doesn’t have quite same ring to it." Of course, it could be argued that Cryer’s character, Alan, an unlucky-in-love/unlucky-in-life divorced dad, has been the half-man all along. "That’s the assumption many people are making at this point," the three-time Emmy nominee says. "And if I do any more shirtless scenes, I think it will be impossible to refute!" In the finale (8 p.m. Monday, KTVT/Channel 11), Alan’s ex-wife, Judith, goes into labor and Alan fears he might be the father. Meanwhile, Charlie (Charlie Sheen), that incorrigible ladies’ man, has second thoughts about being engaged

Neal Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible is latest Web must-see

"The world is a mess, and I just need to rule it,” notes Dr. Horrible, the tepid, fictional villain who has become a new-media hero. Played by Neil Patrick Harris, Dr. Horrible does not mightily proclaim his thirst to rule the messy world; he just whines about it.

You see, Dr. Horrible is a clumsy, insecure villain whose application to the Evil League of Evil keeps getting rejected. So he keeps working on his evil laugh with the help of a voice coach and trying to pad his application.

This is the premise of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” a 42-minute Internet comedy by Joss Whedon, who created “Buffy 1-7 dvd box set” and was nominated for a screenwriting Oscar for “Toy Story.”

The satiric, exceptionally funny “Dr. Horrible” is Whedon’s latest mark on pop culture.

As the name implies, this is a musical. Harris (“Doogie Howser, M.D.,” “How I Met Your Mother”) often breaks into song. The first ditty has him crooning about snagging a girl’s attention with a freeze ray.

“I’ll bend the world to our will, and we’ll make time stand still,” he sings with dramatic intonation, wearing his evil goggles.

The short film became so popular, Whedon recently released a DVD version available on Amazon.com, but the original can be seen at www.DrHorrible.com and hulu.com.

Feel free to sing along.

Death of sitcoms

The broadcast networks are going to unveil fall lineups to media buyers next week, and when they do there’s a good chance there won’t be many new comedies.

The few that are on the networks’ schedules will most likely be along the lines of NBC’s “Parks & Recreation,” meaning smart and edgy.

Likely as not, they will fail to attract viewers. It’s almost as if the networks haven’t been paying attention to Nielsen ratings the past few years.

Those ratings make clear that most viewers want family comedies like CBS’s “Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set,” which is a huge hit on network television and in syndication. They do not want quirky shows.

That's according to a Magna analysis of comedy ratings over the past several years.

Magna points to hit family sitcoms in syndication like “Everybody Loves Raymond” and “George Lopez” that are continuing to pull in strong audiences years after leaving network TV.

Yet the bulk of network sitcoms are in the mode of Fox’s canceled “Arrested Development.” While the show was adored by critics, and served to up Fox’s profile with upper-income, well-educated TV viewers, it failed to draw a mass audience to the network.

This edgy approach to TV sitcoms goes a long way in explaining network TV’s years-long sitcom drought.

Last fall, there were 22 sitcoms on network TV, down from 50 in 2003, according to Magna.

That decline has led to much talk of the death of the sitcom, but the reality is that comedies are more popular than ever, just not on network TV.

On average, adults 18-34 spend 2.89 hours each week watching sitcoms, up from 2.58 hours in the early 1990s, according to Magna. But 18-34s spend only 0.17 hours watching network sitcoms, down from 1.47 hours in 1993.

That additional viewing of sitcoms is on cable and in syndication.

Even older adults have veered away from broadcast comedies. Adults 50-64 this season are watching 0.20 hours of network sitcoms each week, down from 1.2 hours 15 years ago.

The other reason network comedies aren’t doing well is competition. And while much of it is shows in reruns, like “Seinfeld” and “Friends,” there's more and more original comedies, such as TBS’s “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” and “Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns,” two of the highest-rated comedies on cable TV.

Neither is anything close to being quirky. These are straight-up family sitcoms that harken back to the 1970s with laugh tracks, simple storylines and broadly drawn characters.

Last week on network TV, the highest-rated sitcom among 18-49s was “Two and a Half Men,” with a 5 rating. That show’s lead-out, “Rules of Engagement,” about two couples, one married, one engaged, was the second-highest rated comedy with a 4.1.

A Funny Thing About the Shortage of Comedies

As the broadcast networks prepare to unveil their schedules for the 2009-10 season to advertisers in New York next week, Magna has taken a look at what was once a TV staple: the sitcom. Steve Sternberg, executive VP for audience analysis at Magna, a division of Interpublic’s Mediabrands, notes in a new report that in the fall of 2003, the broadcast networks aired a record 50 comedies. By comparison, last fall there were just 22 comedies on the networks. Three of them were new and none of those will be back. The comedies that debuted midseason are not performing well either, he said. One reason the broadcasters may be having trouble developing comedies is because they seem to prefer the edgier fare. Meanwhile, viewers—and advertisers—prefer family-friendly shows. “The bulk of viewers are not looking for the next ‘Arrested Development,’ they’re looking for the next ‘Everybody Loves Raymond,’” Mr. Sternberg says in his report. Despite the tough time the networks are having creating new comedies, Mr. Sternberg nonetheless makes the counterintuitive claim that viewers are watching more comedies than they were back in the early ’90s, when such favorites as “Cheers,” “Roseanne,” “Cosby,” “The Golden Girls,” “Home Improvement,” “Murphy Brown,” “Designing Women,” “Seinfeld,” “Friends” and “Frasier” ruled the airwaves. That’s because while most of TV’s hit comedies are no longer airing in first-run on the broadcast networks, they’re available in syndication, on cable and in boxed sets of DVDs. “Every year at this time, the networks start revealing their program development plans for the new season. Press stories abound about how they might try to revive the network comedy,” Mr. Sternberg says in his report. “Seldom noted in these stories, however, is the fact that people still like watching comedies, and are in fact watching them more than ever.” Mr. Sternberg says that of the top 15 comedies on TV, only two will be on a broadcast network this fall: “Family Guy” and “Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set.” The other top comedies are “George Lopez,” “Home Improvement,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Seinfeld,” “Family Matters,” “That ’70s Show,” “The King of Queens,” “Friends,” “Frasier,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” “Roseanne” and “M*A*S*H.” In fact, viewers are spending more time watching “Seinfeld,” “Friends” and “Everybody Loves Raymond” now than they did when those series were among the top-rated shows on broadcast television. Mr. Sternberg calculates that in the 1993-94 season, there were about 180 hours per week of comedies on television, including broadcast, syndication and ad-supported cable. During the 2008-09 season, there were 790 hours of comedies available. There are more comedies in syndication, with eight off-network series airing in 1993-94 and 25 airing now. Off-net comedies were very rare in the mid-’90s. Now, just about every cable channel has one on its schedule. And that’s not including the original comedies on cable, such as “South Park” on Comedy Central,” FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Meet the Browns” and TBS’ “House of Payne,” “My Boys” and “The Bill Engvall Show.” Mr. Sternberg hopes the networks can return to making comedies, particularly ones that can be watched by the whole family. “Roughly 80% of homes during primetime only have one television set turned on,” he says. “Families do want to watch television together, and are looking for comedies that fit that mold.” His message to producers and network executives is that comedy viewers haven’t disappeared. “They’re just biding their time, happily watching the comedies they’ve loved for years—just waiting for a new one to join the club,” he says.

Michael J. Fox makes strong return to TV

In addition to being an optimist, Michael J. Fox is still a television star.

His special "Adventures of an Incurable Optimist" was watched by 10.2 million viewers, enough to put it on Nielsen Media Research's list of the 20 most popular prime-time shows. The former sitcom star and Parkinson's patient explored the nature of positive thinking.

It helped ABC run neck-and-neck for second place with Fox for the weekly ratings. CBS remained dominant, as home to 11 of the 14 most-watched scripted shows in prime time last week.

Nielsen was able to get its ratings out on time after a disastrous week last week. A processing backlog delayed ratings last week, annoying TV networks at a time they're making decisions on next fall's schedule.

For the week, CBS averaged 10.8 million prime-time viewers (6.8 rating, 12 share), Fox had 8.8 million (5.3. 9), ABC 8.7 million (5.6, 10), NBC 6.4 million (4.2, 7), the CW 1.9 million (1.3, 2), My Network TV 1.5 million (0.9, 2) and ION Television 560,000 (0.4, 1). ABC's ratings were higher than Fox's despite a smaller audience, an indication that more people watched the ABC shows alone.

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with 3.7 million viewers (1.9 rating, 3 share), Telemundo had 1.1 million (0.6, 1), TeleFutura 580,000 (0.3, 1) and Azteca 140,000 (0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.9 million viewers (5.3, 11). ABC's "World News" was second with 7.5 million (5.1, 11) and the "CBS Evening News" had 5.7 million viewers (3.9, 8).

A ratings point represents 1,145,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.5 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of May 4-10, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "American Idol" (Wednesday), Fox, 23.57 million; "American Idol" (Tuessday), Fox, 23.41 million; "Dancing With the Stars," ABC, 20.28 million; "NCIS," CBS, 16.72 million; "The Mentalist," CBS, 16.68 million; "Grey's Anatomy," ABC, 15.55; "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 14.91; "Dancing With the Stars Results," ABC, 14.56 million; "Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd ," CBS, 14.17 million; "Criminal Minds," CBS, 14.13 million.

ABC is owned by the Walt Disney Co. CBS is owned by CBS Corp. CW is a joint venture of Warner Bros. Entertainment and CBS Corp. Fox and My Network TV are units of News Corp. NBC and Telemundo are owned by General Electric Co. ION Television is owned by ION Media Networks. TeleFutura is a division of Univision. Azteca America is a wholly owned subsidiary of TV Azteca S.A. de C.V.

Are the Jonas Brothers Over…Again?

Was the Jonas Brothers' new TV show a one-week wonder? Is Fox demanding an American Idol recount? And what was the final Nielsen verdict on Dollhouse?

The answers—and more questions—in this week's ratings quiz:

1. Have Joe, Nick and Kevin flopped again? No, and, by the way, their concert movie didn't really flop, either. But the brothers are bad at playing the expectations game. A week after their Disney Channel sitcom, JONAS, debuted to solid numbers, the show lost nearly half its audience (from 4 million viewers to 2.2 million, per the latest Nielsen weekly rankings), and fell from cable's Top 15 to cable's Top 100-something, which, in the grand scheme of things, is still a very good showing—unless you're trying to live up to the media's expectations for a world-famous act.

2. What happened to JONAS? iCarly, it would seem.

Nick's new iCarly hour-long special, iDate a Bad Boy, scored a cable-best 6.5 million viewers. Not only did the show air opposite JONAS, 8-8:30 p.m. on Saturday, it won, dominated and otherwise stole Jonas' target tween audience.

3. What were the week's other cable hits, besides iCarly? There sorta weren't any. A 9 p.m., Saturday iCarly was the No. 2 comedy or drama series (4.6 million). A Sunday repeat of iDate a Bad Boy was No. 3 (4.1 million). A 9:30 p.m., Saturday iCarly was No. 4 (3.8 million), if you don't count a couple of NCIS reruns in between. Top non-iCarly prime-time performers included: In Plain Sight (3.6 million), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (3.1 million), Deadliest Catch (3 million) and I Love Money 2 (2.8 million)

4. Does Fox have a beef with Nielsen over Idol's ratings? No, says Fox, denying an assertion by an exec at Idol-maker 19 Entertainment's corporate parent that the network and Nielsen were going to meet about the show's "oxymoronic" numbers—i.e., increased voting, decreased viewership. Per Fox, no such meeting was, or is, scheduled.

5. How bad are Idol's numbers anyway? Not bad at all. So far, the overall audience for Tuesday's Idol is down a fairly standard 10 percent from last season. Wedesday's Idol is off only 4 percent. Last week, Wednesday Idol scraped by as TV's No. 1 show (23.6 million). Tuesday Idol was No. 2 (23.4 million), followed by Monday's Dancing With the Stars (20.3 million), NCIS (16.7 million), The Mentalist (16.68 million), Grey's Anatomy (15.5 million), CSI (14.9 million), Tuesday's DWTS (14.6 million), Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set(14.2 million) and Criminal Minds (14.1 million).

6. How bad were the numbers for Dollhouse's season finale? Bad is so subjective. Now, little, on the other hand...Among broadcast network shows, the Joss Whedon creation finished 101st, with 2.7 million viewers—or, 1 million fewer than the low-rated series' season average. Even after a week's worth of DVR playback is factored in, the DVR favorite has remained Fox's least-watched drama series.

7. How, um, little is Sit Down, Shut Up looking in its new time slot? Last weekend's episode averaged only 1.5 million viewers, fewer than any show on the big four networks.

8. How can Howie Mandel help Chuck? By having Deal or No Deal do exactly what it's doing in Chuck's old time slot: not much. Last week, the game show drew 4.4 million at 8 p.m., Monday; last night, it scored an estimated 4.2 million. Bubble show Chuck averaged 6.5 million.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Blocks The Baby I Resent

I've decided that it's time I stop referring to Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy. My adoration for the show is well known but I think it's a habit I should break myself of. Hypothetically let's say I meet SMG one day and accidentally call her Buffy 1-7 dvd box set to her face. I don't think she'd care for that.

So, as much as it pains me to say this, much like the end of season five, Buffy 1-7 dvd box set is dead. But Sarah Michelle Gellar is alive and well, working on her new TV show, "The Wonderful Malady's," in NYC.

In between takes Buf ... Sarah Michelle engaged in a little baby bump blockage -- via a scarf and a script -- as she tried to prevent photogs from snapping the first shot of her growing belly. Personally, I don't care about the kid -- in fact, I kinda wish she wasn't pregnant because it puts the kibosh on any rumored "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie.

Buffy is Back on TV!? Whaaat?

I totally squeeed when I saw that headline too. Sadly, I have to disappoint us all.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is beginning filming in New York for her potential new TV show The Wonderful Maladys, according to this website which has a ton more pictures, including one where you can make out page 1 of the script.

But don’t get too excited. The show hasn’t been picked up yet, although if it is, SMG herself is gonna be an executive producer. Which could be a good thing. Then again, according to IMDB.com, the show’s premise currently “revolves around the dysfunctional lives of three adult siblings who lost their parents at a young age”. BORING, and also nothing we haven’t seen before.

Man, ever since Angel ran off to Bones, and Xander had like a five-episode stint (okay, six episodes) as a huge nerd (surprise) on Criminal Minds, there’s just been so little hope for some sort of Buffy 1-7 dvd box set movie/spin-off/revival.

Now we’ve gotta try and make do with Dollhouse (which I hear is getting a lot better), or re-watch Repo! The Genetic Opera a hundred times to see Anthony Stewart Head eviscerate people. Which was actually kinda creepy. And then in that part when he head-butted the guy in the fight, whoa, I was all: “Nooooo Giles! Your head is soft and squishy and you pass out really easily!”.

… But yeah. Back on topic. Would you watch this new show of SMG’s? Or will she always be Buffy 1-7 dvd box set to you?

Two and a Half Men

Two and a Half Men at 100 - featurette on the show's 100th episode.

Well, to be honest, I didn't expect much of this episode, mainly because of the reviews I read. But after watching this episode I felt like all characters came to their right, especially Berta's. I read that in a comment, Carol Mendelsohn (from CSI) said that the CSI writers problably had a lot of unused humour, wich I think is true. Although there were a few misplaced laugh-tracks. The flashbacks were placed brilliantly, with Charlie acting way over the top when he discovers Teddy's body. The super-tight zoom-ins were funny, although they should have used it on other topics besides Jake and food. Conchata Ferrell's acting was great and very funny, and I'm surprised that she didn't gain an Emmy Award nomination this year. Also, Judith's abscense from the episode didn't bother me, while Rose was missed, and I'm curious why the writers didn't write her into the episode. Overall the episode was great, it could have been funnier if the real actors from CSI appeared as CSI's. Also, check out the vanity card at the end of the episode, it's nice that it is written by the writers of CSI instead of Chuck Lorre.

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Fifth Season

It's quite an accomplishment when a sitcom is able to survive the test of longevity, especially when the premise of a show is borderline insulting in its simplicity. You would think after five seasons of churning out the same kind of jokes that the formula would grow stale. However, Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set continues to stand as a testament that a product doesn't need to be complicated in order to work, as it continues to deliver just as many laughs during its fifth season as it did in its first.

Charlie Harper is laid back and cool, living life without a care in the world. He's got a small fortune from writing commercial jingles, a house on the beach, a maid, a revolving door of gorgeous young women in his bedroom, and a liver that's seemingly impermeable to the damaging effects of alcohol. His brother Alan however, is Charlie's exact polar opposite. He's a hard working chiropractor, has his son Jake to look out for, is incredibly uptight and hates his brother's 'live in the moment' lifestyle. Alan also prefers long term relationships despite the fact that they usually end up in divorce. Courtesy of some hefty alimony payments, Alan was forced to decide between living with his insufferable mother or his brother Charlie. Unfortunately for Charlie's lifestyle, Alan chose the latter.

And that's really all there is to the premise of the show. With the inclusion of Alan's son Jake to the mix, Two and a Half Men basically plays out as a modern day version of The Odd Couple plus one. Even though it's a concept that's been done to death ever since the dawn of sitcom, the extreme contrast between Charlie and Alan plays out much better than one would initially expect. The fifth season opens a whole new world of refreshingly snappy one liners between the brothers as Charlie begins seeing matured women, as opposed to the young college meat he normally keeps under the sheets.

TV tonight: '24'

A week before the finale, crises pile up.

Tony Almaeda (Carlos Bernard) - once good, now evil - is helping plant a poison-gas bomb on a Washington subway, with a dupe framed to be the suspect.

Meanwhile, the president's daughter scrambles. She had considered killing the nasty Hodges, then changed her mind; her colleagues did it anyway and she's entangled.

Jack Bauer could save the day - he's already rescued the dupe's hostage brother - but it's tough. At headquarters, two techies (Mary Lynn Rajskub and Janeane Garofalo) snipe at each other. Also, Jack's daughter Kim is still around and available to be kidnapped yet again.

Unfolding tonight is a typical "24" episode - taut, compelling, wildly unbelievable, yet addictive. It sets up what could be a big finish.

PBS documentary series continues

TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE II: "American Experience: We Shall Remain" conclusion, 9-10:30 p.m., Channel 23 (PBS).

The first four chapters of this well-crafted documentary series showed American Indians losing turf to the European newcomers. Now we see a modern attempt to fight back.

Some 200 people - Oglala Lakota, linking with activists in the American Indian Movement - took over the Wounded Knee hamlet in South Dakota, holding it for 71 days. This was perfect timing (the White House was preoccupied with Watergate) and location; near the spot where the Cavalry had killed hundreds of Lakota men, women and children in 1890, the protesters drew public support.

This documentary looks back at the 20th-century efforts to strip Indian culture. It also sees the takeover as a starting point for modern rethinking.

Other choices

• "Dancing With the Stars," 8-9:32 p.m., Channel 53 (ABC). On consecutive weeks, the Hough siblings were ousted. First was Julianne, with her celebrity partner (and boyfriend) Chuck Wicks; last week was Derek, with Lil' Kim. That leaves four celebrities, a week before the finale - rodeo star Ty Murray, Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, actor Giles Marini and Melissa Rycroft, a fan favorite after being selected and dumped by "The Bachelor."

• "House," 8 p.m., Channel 47 (Fox). In the season finale, staffers are bewildered by a patient whose left brain and right brain seem to work independently. Meanwhile, Cuddy decides to punish Dr. House for spending too much time away from the clinic; she makes him treat a difficult patient, played by Carl Reiner.

• "The Big Bang Theory," 8 p.m., Channel 6 (CBS). In the season finale, the guys train for a science mission in Antarctica. Complicating that is the fall-out since Penny accidentally said Leonard's name while kissing someone else.

• "How I Met Your Mother," 8:30 p.m., CBS. We last saw Tony and Stella when they suddenly ran off together, just before she was going to marry Ted. Now Tony, guilt-ridden, helps Ted get a job; there are aftershocks.

• "Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set," 9 p.m., CBS. Now that Charlie's fiancee has moved in, she's befriending his brother Alan. Charlie takes advantage of the situation.

• "Medium," 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., Channel 10 (NBC). First, in the conclusion of a two-parter, Allison's new corporate job forbids her from sharing her visions with officials; she's desperate to share possible information about a serial killer. Then comes an hour with an odd twist: Allison is in a coma and her soul seems to be in the body of a man (Jeffrey Tambor) who moves in with her husband.

Melodramas of male bonding

IT’S extremely refreshing to note that our free-to-air channels are upping their international series purchasing standards a tad.

I’ve noted the fact that all three SABC channels and e.tv broadcast truly great international dramas and comedies such as Prison Break, and Law & Order, but these series are also brought to us not long after they have been viewed in their countries of origin.

Yes, we are still a few seasons behind in most cases, but back in the day we would be introduced to a series a few years after it had been broadcast internationally.

Lately, we are very unlucky to see a series more than two years after it has been seen overseas, unless it is a repeat broadcast on our side.

Two and A Half Men 1-5 dvd box set is an example — the sitcom recently ended its sixth season internationally and last week the first episode of season four aired on SABC 3.

Starring Charlie Sheen as Charlie Harper, Jon Cryer as Alan Harper and Angus T Jones as Jake Harper, the multiple Emmy award- winning sitcom, which premiered in America in 2003, revolves around the life of two brothers — one carefree and free-spirited, the other battling with the issues of being a divorced father to a lazy boy who does not achieve in anything but video and computer games.

The comedy sitcom brings to life the scary thoughts of how a household made up of three males would fair.

There are conflicts, love-life crises, boy issues and the usual raising a boy-child glitches — all of which are portrayed with the most intriguing humour.

After season two, during which Berta the sarcastic housekeeper (played by Conchata Ferrell) is introduced, it seems the household takes a turn for the worse.

Berta comes with her own pile of problems but because of what seems like her rude nature, she is treated with a tremendous amount of respect by the boys.

Season four is no different — Berta still calls the shots, Alan is having a break-down after his second divorce, Charlie is still a player but seems to be dating even more of the wrong kind of women after nearly getting married and Jake remains his couch-potato and mischievous self. He receives a rude awakening when he leaves home all by himself for the first time.

Buffy and Angle

Funny thing. Both in Buffy and Angel, seasons 2, 3 and 5 are my favorites. Of course, with Buffy the order of personal preference is: 2, 3, 5, while with Angel it's 5, 2, 3 (although it's a close thing).

Having said that: yes, Angel is as good as Buffy 1-7 dvd box set. It's impossible for me to devide the two. Because although both had their own distinct themes and vibe, it was still one universe and one "thing" in my mind. I was an automatic 'Angel' fan when the show started (although I was slightly dissapointed by much of the first season like most people), and that never let up. The show never dissapointed and I ended up preferring it to Buffy most weeks. In fact, when S2 of Angel and S5 of Buffy was airing, that was pretty much the strongest simultaneous stretch of Whedon-tv to date, I'd say, hitting many a high note all around.

And I'd agree with people saying that Angel was darker. Buffy S6 was bleak and depressing, but not really very dark, I'd say. Plus: Angel felt more adult in its content (despite the fact that Buffy 1-7 dvd box set in its latter seasons actually dealt more with how to be an adult).

As for quality: it's simply hard to say. Because while S6 is probably my second least-favorite Buffy season (I "dislike" S4 most), that's still mostly due to personal preferences. It's very good. Just like Angel was for almost its entire run (with the possible exception of parts of S1 which were adequate, but not great). So for me, it's impossible to distinguish.

Is Angel As Good As Buffy?

Could we maybe do without that particular parenthetical? It'd be awesome if we could delay the inciting of a riot until at least a few comments in.

Now that the link is fixed I can comment. There isn't much to say really other than I haven't agreed with much of anything Jane said before so it comes as no surprise to me that I don't agree with much of anything she said this time. I'm a huge fan of Angel both the character and the series. I won't bother arguing that it's better than Buffy 1-7 dvd box set because, honestly, I like them for different reasons and both hold an equally important place in my very geeky heart.

This, combined with that poll of best Whedon shows where Angel barely got any votes, made me feel like it was worth saying "Hey, I love Angel" because, hey again, I do. Great show, great characters, and a great five years worth of tv watching for me.

Eric Wight on 'Frankie Pickle'

Eric Wight has become a fan-favorite for his comics and animation work, including the “Atomic County” art on The O.C., the unproduced Buffy the Vampire Slayer cartoon, The Escapist and My Dead Girlfriend. His latest project is the all-ages text-and-prose graphic novel Frankie Pickle and the Closet of Doom, the tale of an imaginative kid versus a very dirty room. The tale combines illustrated prose sections for Frankie’s “regular” life with graphic novel sequences depicting his outrageous fantasies. We talked with Wight about his new book, which is in stores now, and got an update on My Dead Girlfriend.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

The other day I posted a DVDRip pack for a relatively new vampire series “True Blood”, how about we have some old one posted too So here is one of my all time favourites “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer”. Created in 1997 by writer-director Joss Whedon, the series narrative follows Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar the latest in a line of young women known as Slayers. Slayers are chosen by fate to battle against vampires, demons, and other forces of darkness. Like previous Slayers, Buffy 1-7 dvd box set is aided by a Watcher, who guides and trains her. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy surrounds herself with a circle of loyal friends who become known as the “Scooby Gang”. The original DVDRip pack was released by ESVCD in SVCD standard, but I’m sure nobody want SVCD release now, so here is an iNTERNAL pack from group BE, enjoy!

Buffy Summers looks like your typical perky high-schooler, and like most, she has her secret fears and anxieties. However, while most teens are worrying about their next date, their next zit, or their next term paper, Buffy’s angsting over the next vampire she has to slay. See, Buffy, a young woman with superhuman strength, is the “chosen one,” and she must help rid the world of evil, namely by staking demons……

Jane After Dark: Is Angel as good as Buffy?

Well, I've covered Buffy the Vampire Slayer here on Jane After Dark, and my nephew, who loaned me his Buffy 1-7 dvd box set DVDs, also got me into Angel. Nearly everyone I talked to about Angel said they just couldn't get into it. After Buffy, maybe everything else pales in comparison.

I have to say, I really only started watching Angel out of respect for Buffy and Joss Whedon, and because I really loved the character of Angel (and David Boreanaz is not hard to look at). I was alternately watching Buffy and Angel at the same time (one disc of Buffy, one of Angel, and so on); it was a good way to do it, because there were a few crossover episodes that made a lot more sense watching them that way.

Now, down to brass tacks. Angel ran for five seasons, and it took me three seasons to really get into it. The first three were just sort of meh for me, but I got through them by forcing myself to alternate with the Buffy 1-7 dvd box set discs (look, Jane, you can't watch another disc of Buffy until you watch a disc of Angel!). It was a good strategy. Part-way into season three of Angel, I was finally looking forward to seeing what happens next.

I will say, though, that by season four, Angel really turned into a very different show than when it started. You had Cordelia basically lying in a coma for much of the season, after the weirdly hot sex she had with Angel's son, Connor (and Oh.My.God. I just realized that Vincent Kartheiser plays Peter Campbell in Mad Men - I had no idea!). But the "case of the week" format that started the series was completely out the window (along with the female cop - whatever happened to her?), with demons and other-dimensional creatures taking center stage. Andy Hallett's musical demon Lorne is one of my favorite characters, and I was saddened to hear of his recent death.

While I loved the Connor story overall, I couldn't really get into the thing with him and Cordelia being the "parents" of Jasmine. However, I just watched the last episode of season four, "Home," and it's definitely the best of the series so far, reminiscent of the best episodes of Buffy. Angel making a deal with Lilah about taking over Wolfram & Hart in exchange for giving Connor a new life with a normal family -- and everyone's memory wiped clean of Connor except for Angel (I think) -- was just heartbreaking. Especially the end scene with Angel looking in the window of Connor's new life, having a joyful dinner with his family before heading off to college.

Skimming the episode list of season five, which I'll start this week, it doesn't appear that Connor makes an appearance (or...does he...?), and for that, I'm really sorry. I love his character, but I guess my vision of he and Angel fighting the good fight together into the future doesn't come to pass.

One thing missing for me from Angel which was always present in Buffy 1-7 dvd box set is romance. There are bits of it here and there, but the relationships are totally dysfunctional -- Angel and Darla, Wesley and Lilah, and Cordelia and Connor, to name a few. Fred and Gunn were good together, but not a lot of spark there. I'm still hoping for a Fred/Wesley pairing, as well as an Angel/Cordy pairing. Come on, season five! Deliver the goods!

So what's my assessment on Angel so far? Good series, darker than Buffy, love the characters, and looking forward to season five.

What about you? Did you love Angel as much as Buffy? Moreso?

Give the People What They Want

When in doubt go with what works! Channel Nine has, for weeks now, struggled to get any sort of traction in the southern states to complement their Friday Rugby League dominance north of the Murray, we last night saw the dropping of Til Death moving The King of Queens back a half hour and putting in an extra Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set.

The additional Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set came second in Melbourne and Adelaide enough turn up in the top 30 on the back of only three cities. They're putting an extra episode on Mondays as well, replacing one of those factuals, that will make 8 episodes a week/9 in southern markets!

This is all well and good but I'm starting to recognise eps that I've seen before, and I'm more generous on reruns than most people so Nine is getting into dangerous territory here, betting that this sitcom has the legs of The Simpsons, all I'd ask them to do is look at what happened to Seinfeld, a show which you just can't stip early evenings anymore (save for the niche market of cable) because everybody seen the episodes three times over!

As I suggested Law & Order has hit the ground wheezing, it would be the perfect series for Friday nights, were it not for its even older skewing opposition and the fact that men are well served between Midsomer and various football codes, not to mention those war and sex docos on SBS, the real available audience is women and Medium didn't do it for them, neither do movies (it's rare that one pops into the top 30 on a Friday) the question is - what do women want?

PACER Center benefit draws more than $100,000 for disabled kids.

In its 27th year, the annual PACER Center benefit is one of the biggest parties, but it's all about where the money goes -- to help disabled kids.

"We are trying to help as many children with disabilities as possible. Our goal is to raise money to launch our bullying prevention site for teenagers," said Paula Goldberg, the organization's executive director.

The cocktail crowd had lots of opportunities to contribute. They could bid on items in the silent auction, which were listed in a catalog as thick as an issue of Reader's Digest, or participate in the live auction. Auctioneer Karen Sorbo coaxed more than $100,000 out of the audience on items such as a white Mercedes SLK 300 convertible and a trip to Los Angeles with tickets to see tapings of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" and "Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., a former PACER board member, was in attendance. "My daughter couldn't swallow for the first year and half. I lived this life, the PACER life," she said. Her daughter Abigail fully recovered and will soon be graduating from eighth grade.

The main show involved a couple of "Frankie V's" -- WCCO's Frank Vascellaro and his wife, Amelia Santaniello, emceed the event, while Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons provided the retro soundtrack, which included "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" and "Big Girls Don't Cry."

From raising awareness about disabled children to the foot-tapping music of those tunes, the event was definitely on key.

'Ghost Whisperer' jumps on the vampire fad bandwagon

This week on "Ghost Whisperer", one of Ned's high school friends has herself a serious sleepwalking problem, an absentee father, and a ghost who wants to be a vampire. Doesn't everyone lately though?

Ned's friend Serena is a teensy bit forgetful lately, and it might be because she's got a crazy sleepwalking problem that leaves her covered in clay. She's also being trailed by a ghost with strange bloodshot eyes and receiving gifts of plumeria flowers and sphinx moths in her locker at school, which supposedly means something spooky. When she confronts another guy, Jonathan, about the flowers and the sleepwalking, he's bolts, but is immediately enveloped by chalk dust. Ooo. Scary chalk dust!

Meanwhile, Melinda tries to help Serena by approaching her mom, played by the awesome Gail O'Grady. We're not even past the credits when she explains her ghost gift. That might be a new record. Melinda thinks the ghost might be protecting Serena from something or someone. Turns out Serena's dad is cheating.

That evening, Serena comes to see Melinda, and asks if the dead person is real - she knows she's being haunted by a guy - but she doesn't really want them to leave. But she doesn't seem to realize that it's a ghost, and when told that by Melinda, she flees. Melinda calls Eli, who recounts all of the weirdnesses about Serena, just as Zoe the voodoo expert professor walks by. She says the sleepwalking, clay, flowers, moths, and dust all add up to vampires.

That evening, Serena wakes up completely covered in wormy clay, and starts apologizing to the fluttering curtains for blabbing about him to Melinda.

So, a ghostly vampire! Vampires who live and love forever, unlike Serena's father. After a quick Internet search, they find Andrew, a high schooler who recently died of a blood disease. He's no Edward Cullen, but he's trying hard to be for Serena. Serena wasn't aware that he died, but they were close. Serena thought Jonathan was the vampire, but Melinda explains that Andrew is a ghost, and the one who has been stringing her along with the vampire lore clues.

That evening, Andrew shows up in Melinda's dreams, disguised as Jim. He tells Melinda that she cheated death once, and it doesn't mean that she will again. Not really sure that dream was about the Andrew situation; Melinda still has a price to pay for getting Jim back. When she wakes up, Andrew is there, and he says that he'll have Serena, one way or the other. The next day, Andrew lures Serena out of her house with the promise that she could see him again.

He leads her to his family's mausoleum, surrounded by red clay and sphinx moths. She says she's lonely, and doesn't want to be lonely anymore. He pushes the door open for her, explaining that they'll be together soon if she goes in. Before she runs out of air, Melinda arrives to confront Andrew and explains that what he's doing to Serena isn't love. He leads her to the mausoleum just in time, and after reuniting with her parents, who are going to give their own relationship a second chance, Andrew explains that Serena's loneliness must be addressed before he heads into the light. The wormy bed isn't mentioned, but boy, it should have been because that's no way to show affection either. And was the cemetery they used right out of a Buffy 1-7 dvd box set or what?

This episode actually did some very nice psychotherapy on teenagers and the latest version of the pop culture fascination with vampires. Now only if all those vampire fans could start watching Ghost Whisperer, too, eh? Man, I really miss Buffy 1-7 dvd box set now.

On a happier and less wormy note, there's a wedding to plan and a big baby bump too. And now, technically, Melinda has two mother-in-laws to deal with since they're inviting Jim's mom. It looks as though the wedding is next week, on the season finale, along with some other good stuff. Bring on the spooky.

Why Dollhouse Really Is Joss Whedon's Greatest Work

Back before Dollhouse first aired, we argued it would be the best thing Joss Whedon had ever done. Now its first season is ending, and we were proved right. Here's why.

First, let's get this out of the way right off the bat: Yes, Dollhouse had some weak individual episodes. The back-up singer episode, for starters. I also thought the college campus "Naked Time" episode was as weak as a Tiberian milk-bat. This goes with the territory - every Joss TV series has had weak individual episodes, especially in its first season. Buffy 1-7 dvd box set had "The Pack" and "Teacher's Pet." Angel had... well, its entire first season. Firefly had "Safe" and "Heart Of Gold." So it's not really a valid complaint to say that Dollhouse had a couple lame episodes.

So with that aside, let's talk about how much Dollhouse rules (and, we hope, will continue to rule for years to come.)
Looking at Joss' career to date (especially his television work) you can see a trend towards moral ambiguity, which has made his work richer and richer. In Buffy 1-7 dvd box set, there are fairly clear-cut good guys/gals and baddies, who tend to be demonic or infected with some kind of supernatural evil. And over time, Buffy itself became more and more ambiguous, as we met demons who weren't all bad, and Buffy 1-7 dvd box set herself got darker and more willing to cross moral lines to do what was necessary. And then Angel was constantly challenged by his dark side as well. But it wasn't really until Firefly that Joss gave us the consummate anti-hero: Mal Reynolds, a criminal who's out for his own gain and quite willing to get his hands dirty in the process. There are lines Mal won't cross, but we never entirely know what they are until he comes right up against them.

Q. Is James Spader of 'Boston Legal' an attorney?

I am addicted to Boston Legal reruns. Could you please tell me if James Spader has ever won any awards for his sensational role? Also, what is he doing now? Is he an attorney, is he married, is he going to make any movies? — I.S., Tamarac

Spader won three Emmys for playing Alan Shore — two for Boston Legal, the other for The Practice. He has just finished production on a film with the working title Shorts. Jon Cryer of Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set and William H. Macy also have featured roles. Spader is not an attorney; he only played one on TV. Fact is, he is a high school dropout. If you can't get enough of Boston Legal, the DVD of the fifth and final season went on sale Tuesday. This means you could own every episode if you have the inclination and budget.

I am positive I have seen Chuck Lorre's name listed for a variety of credits in addition to Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set and The Big Bang Theory. Considering the success of these two series, Lorre might be considered a comic genius. Can you tell us his background and accomplishments? — W.T., e-mail

Besides proving almost single-handedly that comedy isn't dead with his two hit CBS series, Lorre's credits include Dharma & Greg, Grace Under Fire and multiple episodes of Roseanne. He has written one or more episodes for several other series, including Cybill, My Two Dads and even Beany and Cecil.
Whatever happened to Knight Rider? I know it was criticized a bit for its dull plot, but was it canceled? Or has the season just ended? Will it return? I actually liked watching that show. — D.K., Coral Springs

Knight Rider was criticized for a lot more things than being dull. "Inane" and "a poor copy of the original" come to mind. All the original episodes have aired, mainly because NBC had a lucrative product-placement deal with the car company that made KITT. The series hasn't been officially canceled yet. That will happen on May 18 when NBC's fall schedule is rolled out.

Leverage is the best new series on TV. It reminds me of Mission: Impossible. I hope it is renewed for at least the next 10 years. The show that was one of my favorites was Lost. But with island scenes one minute, then back to the city, then back to the island, it is like the French Open tennis tournament — back and forth, back and forth. Lost is just that for me: lost. — D.D., Pembroke Pines

I don't know about 10 years, but Leverage will be back for a second season. I've given up on Lost, too. It's not only "where is it?", now it's "when is it taking place?" When producers can do anything they want, no matter how preposterous, including killing characters, then bringing them back to life, and explain it away with some supernatural babble, I see no point in staying invested in the story.

Some radio commercials use the ploy of a beeping horn to get your attention. Well, it works. However, the potential danger of hearing the blaring of a horn in the immediate vicinity of the car you're driving seems obvious. This is especially true while listening to and being soothed by your favorite music station. There is an instinctive reaction that could possibly lead to an accident. Shouldn't this practice be banned? — Howard, e-mail

I haven't heard those commercials, unless you're referring to the lead-in to traffic reports. You seem to suggest your reaction to hearing a horn is to veer one way or the other or hit your brakes. Mine is to become extra alert and search for where the sound is coming from before I react. But I'll give you your law if you give me mine: outlawing those extra-loud horns that sound like train whistles. Those do make you jump, which I'm sure is the motivation of the knuckleheads who use them.

Obama's Perfect Pitch

There is a Barack Obama protest in the works, and it's not on Capitol Hill.

Tinseltown has long been seen or accused of being the liberal glitterati, but the Hollywood Reporter says that TV network suits haven't been happy with how chatty the president has been, especially on primetime.

Sure, arguably that last press conference was not the White House's idea, and No. 44 just had to show up to the 100th day party that the media had been planning for so long. But come on—three in three months? Even Bill Clinton, who can really talk your ear off, kept it down to two in four years.

Obama's primetime penchant has supposedly cost ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox about $30 million in ad revenue. Fox decided enough was enough this last outing, and stuck to airing "Lie to Me," and won Wednesday night ratings...as it usually does.

Sure, the president has worked up lots of buzz and ratings for recent appearances on "The Tonight Show" and "60 Minutes." But we're talking a KFC ad that you can never get back again. (Well, until the next day.) And don't bring up civic responsibilities about educating a well-informed republic, and whether an episode of "Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set" has more lasting meaning than the knowledge that swine flu should really be called H1N1. That is what the Internet is for.

But really, rather than entertaining ideas of a revolt that they're probably too scared to execute just yet, network execs should extend a hand to Obama and get him to mention a few of his favorite items, and then charge advertisers for it. Consider this:

Ford Escape hybrid sales are rocking because team Obama drives them.
The president has shattered records in license plates.
His autobiographies paid off the family student loans—and his mention of one book title fueled global sales. Hello, bookseller ads.
That elusive youth audience? They trick out in his gear.
For a brief moment, he even saved newspapers.
And then if the execs could get the First Lady to amble behind the podium during his speech? Here come the clothing retail dollars.

This isn't a new idea. "Saturday Night Live" gave Republican rival John McCain one of his finest comic moments as a QVC pitchman. Come on, networks, extend a hand to the president. The only fist you'll need to make is over all those dollars that'll fall into your hands.

Top 10 Reasons Favre Didn't Sign with Vikings...Yet

At the end of another Favre-saturated week, here is my final entry on the continuing Brett-to-Vikings saga. (And if you believe that, you believe that Favre really is retired for good).

With apologies to David Letterman, here are my top 10 reasons that Brett Favre did not sign with the Minnesota Vikings. At least not yet.

10. Worried that he would have to change name of owned-and-operated restaurant from Brett Favre’s Steakhouse to Brett Favre’s House of Lutefisk.

9. Was nervous about having to compete with Vikings quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels, and John David Booty for playing time. In a related story, Brad Pitt is said to be nervous about Angelina Jolie running off with the fat kid from Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set.

8. Was unable to convince Vikings head coach Brad Childress to reinstate the team’s once-annual “sex cruise” on Lake Minnetonka.

7. Wife Deanna doesn’t get along with Delta Burke. (Reference to Brad Childress’s resemblance to Gerald “Major Dad” McRaney. Work with me, people!)

6. Was unfazed when told that Mississippi ranked dead last in the latest state-by-state education rankings while Minnesota ranked first. Cited that Mississippi schools spent much more time on ”necessary” subjects like prevention of rickets and history of the rodeo.

5. Discovered that there are no Waffle Houses in Minnesota and Vikings refused to pay for daily shipment of scattered, smothered, covered, chunked, diced, and peppered hash browns.

4. Refused Vikings request to have surgery to repair torn biceps tendon in right arm; Vikings refused Favre’s counteroffer to instead have Minnesota icon Mary Tyler Moore tattooed on back.

3. Could not make Vikings believe that he was not looking to join Packers rival simply for spite, saying instead that he wanted to play for Minnesota because he “really, really, really hated Ted Thompson.”

2. Local television affiliates cut 11th-hour deal with Vikings; stations were concerned that with Favre in purple, the Vikings home games would not be blacked out and they had already sold airtime to makers of Jack LaLanne’s Power Juicer.

And the number one reason Brett Favre decided this week not to play for the Minnesota Vikings...

1. Are you kidding? It’s only May! Favre never comes out of retirement until August. As sure as I am that Coldplay ripped off Cat Stevens, I’m sure that Favre will be handing off to Adrian Peterson come September.

Local Actors on Prime Time

Hey, it was a great week for local actors on prime time television!

Huntington's Michael Cerveris continued his stint on Fox's science fiction show Fringe, showing up for a crucial scene in this week's episode, and my spies tell me he has a big role in next week's season finale on Tuesday night!

Portmouth's Macy Idzakovich (who appeared locally in Cats and Thoroughly Modern Millie, among other shows) made an appearance in this week's Law & Order SVU, and will be showing up in future episodes.

And of course Marshall grad Conchata Ferrell continues to star every week in the top-rated CBS comedy, Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set.

Is that cool or what?

Battered by Ad Decline, CBS Posts Quarterly Loss

The CBS Corporation, which represents half of Sumner M. Redstone’s media empire, reported a quarterly loss Thursday as its core business, broadcast television, continued to be battered by a steep advertising recession.

But the company’s executives, like others in the media industry, said they were seeing signs that the economy was improving.

“I have no doubt that a recovery is coming in the not-too-distant future,” Mr. Redstone said in a conference call with Wall Street analysts.

The company reported a net loss of $55.3 million, in contrast to a profit of $244.3 million in the same quarter last year. This translated to a loss of 8 cents a share. Revenue declined to $3.2 billion, compared with $3.7 billion in the same quarter last year.

According to analyst estimates compiled by Thomson Reuters, Wall Street expected CBS to report earnings of 7 cents a share on revenue of $3.3 billion.

Revenue at CBS, which is more exposed to the advertising market than its peers, declined at each of its business segments. In addition to television, which includes the CBS broadcast network and the pay-TV channel Showtime, CBS owns radio, outdoor advertising and book publishing businesses. It also owns a digital unit that includes CNET.

In the conference call, Leslie Moonves, the company’s chief executive, said, “we are seeing early signs of improvement in the advertising market, both locally and nationally.”

He added later in the call that, “indications are we’ve seen the bottom of this downturn.”

The company said that earnings in the same quarter last year were particularly robust — making the current quarter look extremely weak in comparison — because of special circumstances. Those included a big gain from shifting to self-distribution in international markets of the “CSI” franchise, reduced production costs because of the Hollywood writers’ strike and political advertising from the presidential election.

Even though its earnings declined, CBS has continued its successful run in the ratings. In the recently completed week, the network, with programs like “The Mentalist,” “NCIS,” and “Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set,” had eight of the top 10 scripted shows on television, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Last week, Viacom, which is also controlled by Mr. Redstone and is the corporate parent of MTV Networks and the Paramount film studio, reported a 34 percent drop in quarterly earnings.

Other media conglomerates, like Time Warner, the News Corporation and the Walt Disney Company, have also recently reported earnings that reflected the sour economy.

Even so, some executives have also sounded upbeat about the direction of the economy, which has been a reversal from their tone in previous quarters. Philippe P. Dauman, the chief executive of Viacom, said the company thought that the advertising market was stabilizing. And Rupert Murdoch, who controls the News Corporation, said he believed that “the worst is over.”

Comedies on Television: Media Insights

It may surprise you to know that people are actually spending more time watching comedies on television today. Many of the hit comedies that ended their broadcast runs are, of course, still on television—in syndication and on cable (not to mention full seasons being available on DVD).

What are the most popular comedies on television today?

Would you believe, the top 15 are Family Guy, George Lopez, Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set, Home Improvement, Fresh Prince, Everybody Loves Raymond, Seinfeld, Family Matters, That ‘70s Show, King of Queens, Friends, Frasier, Andy Griffith, Roseanne and M*A*S*H? Of these, only two, Family Guy and Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set, will be on a broadcast network this fall.

This is part of the problem in developing new network comedy successes. As viewing options proliferate, and the shelf-life of a classic comedy expands by many years, it is far more difficult for new sitcoms to catch on. Viewers are spending more time watching Seinfeld, Friends, and Everybody Loves Raymond today than when they were at the height of their first-run popularity on broadcast television. It makes putting something on broadcast to draw those viewers all the more difficult, because they’re still being compared to those comedy classics.

In 1993/94, combining broadcast, syndication, and ad-supported cable, there were about 180 hours per week of comedies on television. During the 1999/00 season, this rose to 390 hours. It was more than 600 hours during 2006/07, and roughly 790 hours in 2008/09 (this season).

Looking at the amount of time spent with comedies on broadcast, syndicated, and ad-supported cable television combined, shows that viewers are watching more than ever.

Let’s take a look at some comedy trends in syndication and cable. We’ll start with the 1993/94 season, the first in which Nielsen began reporting individual cable programs.

More High-Profile Comedies in Syndication

Back in the 1993/94 season, there were only eight comedies in syndication, six of them off-network series. Only four, Roseanne, Married…With Children, Family Matters, and Empty Nest, aired simultaneously on broadcast and syndication.

Six years later, in the 1999/00 season, there were 21 comedies in syndication (20 off-network). Five comedies, including four of the five highest rated—Friends, Frasier, Drew Carey, and 3rd Rock From the Sun—were airing on broadcast at the same time. Nine other syndicated comedies had been on broadcast the previous season.

During the 2005/06 season. eight comedies—That ‘70s Show, King of Queens, King of the Hill, Malcolm in the Middle, Bernie Mac, Will & Grace, Yes, Dear, and Girlfriends—aired on both broadcast and syndication, with an additional six also having aired on broadcast during the previous season.

In 2006/07, there were 22 comedies in syndication, 20 off-network, 2 off-cable—just four, King of Queens, According to Jim, Scrubs, and Girlfriends, aired on both broadcast and syndication, with six having aired on broadcast during the previous season.

During the 2008/09 season, there have been 25 comedies airing in syndication (20 off-network, 5 off-cable). Four, Family Guy, Two and a Half Men 1-5 dvd box set, According to Jim, and Scrubs, aired on both broadcast and syndication. Only two additional comedies also aired on broadcast the previous year.

Mother's Day Gifts

This is a typical day of most busy moms; getting the kids ready for school, sporting events, cooking dinner extra curricular activities alone, keep us very busy and on the go.

If your Mom is anything like Buffy 1-7 dvd box set Viracola, she needs a break and some appreciation. There are plenty of ways to pamper her, within every budget. For the ultimate massage or facial, the 'V Spa' at the Anatole has you covered. Sarah Long, Spa manager at the V Spa says, "We have three different packages for mothers, one just a full day spa day for mom, one's just for mother's to be with the pregnancy massage, and one is a mother daughter retreat ." Buffy 1-7 dvd box set chose the Vino Therapy massage which costs $125 for 50 minutes or $200 for 80 and uses champagne grapeseed oil. And the organic signature facial, which starts at $130. Buffy says, "It's very relaxing, it's nice to be able to come and just sit and not think or worry, not do anything except just be pampered."

If you'd rather have an experience you can both share, check out the Fort Worth Opera Festival, that's going on through this weekend at Bass Hall. Prices are as low as $20 and go up to $129. Performances included Dead Man Walking, and Carmen, and the intimate hall captures all the magesty of the legendary operas. It's truly worth checking out.

And if you're the 'make it yourself' type, consider whipping up a home made meal for Mom, using fresh local ingredients. Julia Garton went to the one at Mockingbird station and says, " I got lemons from her and golden beets and some tangelos." Farmer's Markets offer fresh, inexpensive varieties of veggies, flowers and home baked goods. Paul Wackym, The Baker Man, says, "I got a mocha chocolate chip with espresso, oatmeal walnut raisin, lemon butter, peanut crunch." One of the benefits of coming to a Farmer's market is you get to interact with the purveyor and learn where your food comes from. Take honey for example, I just heard from the Bee Man that it takes 12 bees their entire lifespan, just to make one teaspoon of honey. Sharing the story with Mom will show her you took the extra time to plan a lovely meal. And you may find a little something extra that's a unique alternative to expensive perfume. Brandon Pollard, The Bee Man, from the Texas Honey Bee says, " We make the lotion bars from the bees wax from our bee hives."

Whatever you plan, do it with style and hurry up!

DIGITAL: Social media used to attract viewers, advertisers

What do top Internet video series The Guild, Diggnation, The Gap Year and Sofia’s Diary all have in common? They use social media to engage their audiences, making the viewing experience more interactive and luring in viewers and advertisers, according to a new case study, “WeVision: The Four Steps to Online Media Success,” from digital media research company Futurescape.

“Digital audiences can be remarkably generous to shows that reach out and involve them. They are prepared to contribute ideas, give practical support and even donate money to production costs,” said Futurescape co-founder Özlem Tunçil of the report. “Web TV shows are a laboratory where the hottest innovation is taking place, so it’s where to look for the principles of entertaining the new digital audience.”

Futurescape looked at 50 original series produced for the Internet in different regions of the world and chose to follow six that had attracted major sponsors and had run for more than one season to understand what they did right.

Included in the study is The Guild, a series about the misadventures of online gamers produced by actress Felicia Day, who had a role in Buffy 1-7 dvd box set and in Buffy creator Joss Whedon’s wildly successful online series Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. In its first season, The Guild attracted millions of viewers who supported the show through PayPal donations. Microsoft signed a distribution deal for the second season, putting the show on MSN, Zune and Xbox Live. Then Sprint signed on as a sponsor. Both signed The Guild to a third season this week. The show also is available on DVD through Amazon’s CreateSpace DVD-on-demand service and is sold as a download through Amazon.

‘Dollhouse’ lives up to the hype

If there’s one thing every cult TV fan should know, it’s this: never doubt Joss Whedon.

It’s a lesson I’ve recently learned with the “Buffy 1-7 dvd box set” creator’s latest series, “Dollhouse.”

For those of you who have never watched, here’s a quick primer: the Dollhouse is a highly illegal and underground organization that basically provides living “dolls” for wealthy and powerful clients. These dolls’ personalities are regularly wiped clean, so they can be imprinted with new ones for each new “engagement.”

But their system isn’t perfect, and we see those cracks in Echo (Eliza Dushku), a doll who starts to remember former engagements during new ones and puts the entire organization at risk.

Echo’s only ally is her handler, Boyd, who quickly becomes a father figure and a constant in her fractured life. Or, in Whedon-speak, he’s totally the Giles to her Buffy 1-7 dvd box set.

Hot on the Dollhouse’s trail is FBI agent Paul Ballard, whose obsession with the supposed urban legend is something of a joke around the bureau.

The pilot, which premiered in February, was confusing and felt more like a mid-season episode than a premiere. It just dropped us right into the middle of the action, with few explanations, and I worried that “Dollhouse” wasn’t going to live up to the hype.

But things improved in the second episode, which gave us more background on the Dollhouse and began delving into the show’s mythology — and we all know Whedon can do mythology like nobody’s business.

It also made the first mention of rogue doll Alpha, who finally showed his face last week and will play a major role in Friday’s season finale.

For me, the real turning point was the episode that revealed the true identity of Ballard’s neighbor and sometime girlfriend Mellie: she was a “sleeper agent” doll working undercover to make sure he didn’t get too close to the truth.

I’m not sure what this says about my powers of deduction, but I didn’t see this coming. At all.

I thought it was going to be this tragic scene, where Ballard’s ladylove was murdered. Then the phone rang, and, upon hearing two magic sentences, sweet little Mellie turned into a killing machine. And my jaw hit the floor.

From then on out, Whedon was on a roll. There was a payoff almost every week, and he seemed determined to not drag anything out.

In a matter of episodes, Ballard also discovered the truth about Mellie and, last week, actually found the Dollhouse.

We also came face-to-face with the murderous Alpha (Alan Tudyk, who you might recognize from Whedon’s “Firefly”), but we weren’t supposed to know it was him at first.

Tudyk showed up as Stephen Kepler, the environmental consultant who designed the Dollhouse. Ballard tracked him down and, in a series of pretty hilarious, perfectly Whedon-esque scenes, forced Kepler to help him break into the Dollhouse.

“Carrots. Medicinal carrots,” Kepler, using every excuse in the book, told Ballard when the agent barged into his apartment and was greeted by a living room full of pot plants. “Personal use medicinal carrots that were here when I moved in, and I’m holding it for a friend.”

In the spirit of full disclosure, I already knew that Tudyk was Alpha — I just can’t resist a good spoiler — and watched with a sense of impending doom as he crippled the Dollhouse’s security system to find Echo, the object of his obsession.

Then, in the blink of an eye, he transformed from Kepler the timid hippie into Alpha, a truly scary and imposing bad guy.

The promos for Friday’s episode — which could be the series’ swan song; Fox has yet to renew it — promise big reveals about who Alpha and Echo were before they joined the Dollhouse and why Alpha went rogue.

If I know Whedon, he certainly won’t be pulling any punches.

CBS was week's most-watched network, Nielsen says

A formidable slate of what's been called "crime-and-cry" dramas kept CBS on top in viewership last week, according to Nielsen Media Research.

It was the ninth straight week that CBS led the pack, scoring eight of the week's top 10 scripted programs (including freshman drama "The Mentalist," ranked No. 4).

Meanwhile, Fox's "American Idol" held the top two positions (for the Tuesday and Wednesday editions, respectively). And ABC grabbed the No. 3 slot with the Monday edition of its own reality-competition series, "Dancing with the Stars." Tuesday's "Dancing" results show took 7th place.

For the week, CBS prevailed with an average of 11.1 million viewers (6.9 household rating, 12 share). Fox was runner-up with 8.9 million viewers (5.3 rating, 9 share). ABC had 8.4 million viewers (5.5 rating, 9 share), NBC 6.4 million (4.2 rating, 7 share), the CW 2.0 million (1.3 rating, 2 share), My Network TV 1.6 million (1.0 rating, 2 share), and ION Television 670,000 (0.4 rating, 1 share).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision had 3.6 million viewers (1.9 rating, 3 share), Telemundo 1.1 million (0.6 rating, 1 share), TeleFutura 710,000 (0.3 rating, 1 share) and Azteca 150,000 (0.1 rating, 0 share).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 8.4 million viewers (5.7 rating, 12 share). ABC's "World News" was second with 7.7 million (5.2 rating, 11 share) and the "CBS Evening News" had 5.7 million viewers (4 rating, 8 share).

A ratings point represents 1,145,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.5 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of April 27-May 3, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: "American Idol" (Tuesday), Fox, 23.26 million; "American Idol" (Wednesday), Fox, 22.37 million; "Dancing With the Stars," ABC, 19.29 million; "The Mentalist," CBS, 17.11 million; "NCIS," CBS, 16.70 million; "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," CBS, 15.54 million; "Dancing With the Stars Results," ABC, 14.72 million; "Two and a Half Men 1-7 dvd box set," CBS, 14.16 million; "Grey's Anatomy" (Thursday, 9 p.m.), 14.12 million; "Criminal Minds," CBS, 13.61 million.
