So let me make it very clear before I continue… Kal Penn, House M.D.’s “Kutner” and Harold & Kumar star, is not dead… He’s very much alive and kickin’. In fact he even has a new job… in the White House at that. So those of you still puzzled by last nights episode of House and wondering “what happened ?”, don’t worry. He was just doing a little something we call ‘acting’ . Oh yeah… of course I’ll explain.
WARNING MAJOR SPOILERS : Yeah we all saw what happened last night on Fox’s killer medical drama, ( and honestly, if you didn’t, to you I say shame. SHAME !!! ) but for those not in the know I will recap : Kutner, the shows “happy go lucky comic lovin’, video game playin’, soda pop drinkin’ fanboy” did the unthinkable. He committed suicide. And no one knows why. The death of one of the coolest characters on the series hit both the shows characters and real life fans by absolute total surprise. What made Kutner (especially to THIS Nerdiest kid ) a total fan favorite was how laid back the character was in such a serious setting. Kutner was a big kid that played pranks, ate fruity pebbles while watching cartoons, loved a comic convention or two and still was just about one of the most brilliant young doctors around. You had to be to work for Gregory House. So, after ending his own life with absolutely NO SIGNS leading to such an act, fans of the show turned to the internets and did what fans do best …SPECULATE !! Almost instantly, Google searches for “Kal Penn death” popped up all over the place and rumors began circulating about everything from an arrest, to friction with the cast, to his real life “death”… anything to explain why Fox would write him off of the show so abruptly. Well, thankfully the answer is a whole lot more simple…. He just got a new job. For the president of the United States.
Penn, 31, who made fame as a co-star in the stoner fueled Harold & Kumar comedies, has become associate director in the White House Office of Public Liaison, administration officials confirmed Tuesday. The Indian-American film star will be an emissary to the Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities, along with arts and entertainment groups. During President Obama’s campaign, Penn was an active voice that became an absolute hit on the college scene.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Penn stated “I was incredibly honored a couple of months ago to get the opportunity to go work in the White House,” Penn explained. “I got to know the President and some of the staff during the campaign and had expressed interest in working there.” Penn described the office as the “front door” of the White House, saying he’ll be responsible for doing outreach with the American public. “They take out all of the red tape that falls between the general public and the White House,” he said. “It’s similar to what I was doing on the campaign.”
Penn admits that his new job comes with a massive pay cut : “There’s not a lot of financial reward in these jobs,” he said. “But, obviously, the opportunity to serve in a capacity like this is an incredible honor.”
