"The world is a mess, and I just need to rule it,” notes Dr. Horrible, the tepid, fictional villain who has become a new-media hero. Played by Neil Patrick Harris, Dr. Horrible does not mightily proclaim his thirst to rule the messy world; he just whines about it.
You see, Dr. Horrible is a clumsy, insecure villain whose application to the Evil League of Evil keeps getting rejected. So he keeps working on his evil laugh with the help of a voice coach and trying to pad his application.
This is the premise of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog,” a 42-minute Internet comedy by Joss Whedon, who created “Buffy 1-7 dvd box set” and was nominated for a screenwriting Oscar for “Toy Story.”
The satiric, exceptionally funny “Dr. Horrible” is Whedon’s latest mark on pop culture.
As the name implies, this is a musical. Harris (“Doogie Howser, M.D.,” “How I Met Your Mother”) often breaks into song. The first ditty has him crooning about snagging a girl’s attention with a freeze ray.
“I’ll bend the world to our will, and we’ll make time stand still,” he sings with dramatic intonation, wearing his evil goggles.
The short film became so popular, Whedon recently released a DVD version available on Amazon.com, but the original can be seen at www.DrHorrible.com and hulu.com.
