The New Dynamic Duo

I have to say, it is rather weird that, in so close a time period, we had two comic books involving tentacled creatures that ate a certain kind of person (children or Slayers) and was willingly given said people by the local townsfolk. The newest issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight features the team of Giles and Faith traveling through Europe. They bump into a young Slayer named Courtney who has run off from Buffy’s crew and wants to make it on her own. Then, they hear about a sanctuary for Slayers in the middle of what Faith calls a Dracula flick. Add to that some deception, a tentacled monster (as mentioned before), and some vampires, and you’ve got your newest Faith story.

I’ve always liked Faith and her bad-assiness, and I love how morally grey she is in the current story. And I find her partnership with Giles intriguing and refreshing. So this issue is automatically a winning combination. We also get to see Faith get a bit more humanized with the scene from when she first became a Slayer. She failed to kill one vampire, and the thought of that failure has haunted her to this day. Faith has always seemed like some untouchable person, and I like my characters round, so this is a superb addition to the history of an already great character. Jim Krueger may not be an established Buffy writer, but he gets the characters. Understandable, considering his experience. Cliff Richards may not be Georges Jeanty, but he’s pretty dang close. I didn’t realize until about halfway into the comic that Jeanty wasn’t the artist. Buffy continues to go strong with its current direction, and each issue makes me more excited for what is to come. This one is no different.
